I'm sure that many of you have seen this done before, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway for those of you who haven't:

A few more pics I took during the install can be seen on my flickr album here:

The thread I created over on my car forums with a bit of an overview of the process:

Why? - The key works fine I find, and it saves having to lift a little flap and press a button :-)

A start button won't make it faster. :D

Sadly you ruined a perfectly good cigarette lighter. :p

A friend did the same thing to his Miata and when I asked him why, he said just because it was cool. His car is highly customized and he enters it into competitions, so I guess the button could be the little extra that would enable him to win.

apart from it being dumb and unnecessary, I would just say that you need to remove the letters that used to designate the cigarette lighter. If you are going to do it, at least do it right.

Also, "Just Say No To Rice", that's my motto.

Perhaps I should have prefaced this thread with the (what I thought was already) obvious fact that this modification serves no practical function. This was instead meant to be a fun and inexpensive ($30 total) summer project for my enjoyment. Yes, you still need to insert the key to start the engine. Otherwise, anybody would be able to hop into my car and drive away, as camo kindly pointed out.

The button was hidden by intention. I will rarely find an occasion to use it, except for when I want to show off this fun little project to fellow enthusiasts. @ cdifoto, there is another 12V socket inside the armrest. I hardly use either of them.

And yes, I'm aware that this button doesn't make my car faster. I also don't find it necessary to insult another person's taste in modifications by blindly labeling it as "rice." Snowman, you are certainly entitled to your opinion but I doubt that a little tact would hurt. Thanks for the pointer about removing the letters that designate it as a cig lighter, I'll probably take care of that tomorrow.

The few I have shown were excited to see it in action, and wanted to try it on their own vehicles. Several are asking me to help them. Interesting to see the contrast in reactions.. ?

Thanks for looking,
Tim

Well it looks cool to me ;)
The negative comments above are because they are not car nuts that enjoy taking standard cars and modifying them... Modifying cars can be from small (starter Button) to large projects (like a body kit).

Now if you had done that to a camera, they would be drolling all over it

I'm a car nut, and though i love function over form, I don't see anything wrong with this. It's a nice project, even if only aesthetic :).

FYI, BMW has been using start buttons starting w/ model year 2007 in some models like the 328i. Audi will employ the start button begining with the 2008 model year. I tried it when I test drove the 328i, and it's not necessary or practical. Just something cool to have; akin to starting a jet aircraft or the millenium falcon. If BMW and Audi think it's cool, that means so should you :-)

Nice one Tim, great mod, well carried out, "we do these things because we want to do them", not something I'd do but all credit to you !

Don't take too much notice of us Tim, The problem is this is not a car modding forum... :-)

Tim - Your next project (should you decide to accept it) is to replace the steering wheel with a joystick (just like an Airbus) - Now that would be impressive :-) :-)

If it did start without the key, where would you go since the steering wheel would be locked.
