Hey,

I was pretty sure that I was going to get a 1dmk2 for various reasons but using my 20D for long exposures last night it made me wonder if the 1dmk2 will actually be a step up IQ wise? IQ isn't the only reason I want to upgrade but it's made me wonder! If it's not a decent difference I think i'm going to seriously consider the 5D.

Cheers,
Adam

I went from a 20D to a mark II about 2 years ago.

There are many reasons I'm glad I upped the game; but IQ is not one of them. I think the 1DmarkIIn performs marginally better at high ISO than the 20D, but the difference is very small. Otherwise the IQ is similar, if shooting in RAW. I think (but can't prove) that the JPG conversion in-camera is a little better on the 1d...N but nothing to spend money on.

On the other hand, in the 1DmarkIIN favor, is....
dramatically better AF system
weather sealing
don't loose FEL with CF4-1
some minor features.

and in the 20D's favor...
built-in flash
easier interface
smaller & lighter

dont buy a mk2 for the diffrence in IQ with the 20d there to close
the 5d wins and is up along with the 1ds mk2 IQ.
