I bought a used Digital Rebel - the original D300 - and it did not come with instructions. I have been dramatically underexposing the lions share of my shots. I dimmed the LCD, but I have not been able to find the Histogram display.

Does the original Rebel show a histogram in chimp time?

If so, how? Custom Function? Firmware hack? How?

Rad

Oh, speaking of firmware, the camera shows Firmware version 1.1.1.1

Go to this site (external link) and you can download a owners manual in pdf. To see the histogram use the info button while reviewing the shot.

Real time? The only way it could show a real-time histogram is if it had live view. The first Canon camera to ship with live view was realeased just a couple of months ago, so no, your five-year old camera does not have live view.

No not "live view" of course.

I mean at the time of the shot - chimp time - as opposed to later reviewing.

"Live view" shows you what the sensor is seeing BEFORE you take the shot. This includes getting a histogram before you take the shot.

I use the XT and the exposure compensation feature is key.
After a few sample shots in a given situation
you can dial in your exposure as you like it.

When you take a shot, press the info button a few times until it shows the image w/a histogram, then from that point it will show the histogram each time you take a shot on the LCD (both immdiatly after the shot and when you review them later, to see the image on the full screen either zoom in or press the info button again)

Did you get the pdf Manual?

I seem to remember the 300D I used once had an interface based on the A and G series cameras.
Is there a button on the side labled "disp" if so it should cycle through all the display options when the camera is in review mode.

So long and thanks for all the flash
