Hum.. I'm looking at 40D pictures and they seems crystal clear, whereas all my XTi shots looks underexposed or at least flat and fade, even with +1/3 exp. comp.

Is it me or the 40D is crytal clear versus the XTi ?

I might just be hallucinating, too..

Depends on the PPing too. Lightroom can make your XTi images look like a 40D.

The 400D and 40D should be pretty similar in IQ. Do you shoot RAW or jpg? "Untouched" is kind of a red herring. Contrast/Saturation/Sharpness settings can be applied by the camera or PP. That is your choice. Doing it PP allows you to look at the effects of the settings as you change them and you pick the most appropriate amount. You can also do it in camera for convenience sake but the setting might not be appropriate for all images you are shooting.

he means 2 new cameras out of the box, but regardless of that there are many things that can effect the question, the lenses, the lighting, the apeture etc.... unless you have 2 cameras taking the pics at the same settings it could be nothing

A clearer test would be to shoot RAW in both cameras at the same exposure (ie. not settings, but ensuring that the exposures in each camera are as bright as each other) and then process both RAW images in Canon's DPP with the same parameters. I've got a feeling that RAW processing would equalize most things. Only more discerning eyes will be able to tell the difference. But at this level I'd be guessing that things are mostly a wash.
