1D upgrade to 40D

I'm thinking about upgrading my 1D to the 40D. I mainly need image quality improvements. at ISO 100 on the 1D I get banding in some places.

I went to a store earlier today and messed around with the 40D. I loved everything about it. Then the person working there walked up to me and handed me a 5D+24-105 combo. Now I want the 5D also.

Tough decision isn't it? In the past when I was considering a 20D/ 30D or a 1D, the choice was pretty clear for me. I went for the 1D straight away. But with the 40D around today I'd say it makes a better choice than the 1D unless the 8FPS is really important. But give all the other features and 'improvements', the very slight tradeoff is more than worth it...only that the 1D would obviously be cheaper than a 40D.

The 5D (or any FF platform) and a 24-105mm makes a great combo. Being away from home for the last 6 months I had to make do without any changes to my setup. I have no telephoto lens, but the 24-105mm range is superbly useful for most travel photography, group shots, portraits...and in a pinch has served me for a wedding, even without a flash. It's not wrong to lust. We've all been there, I'm sure.

I'm only wondering how a 40D and Sigma 18-200mm OS combo will perform.
