Anyone else think that the 40D is going to be the biggest selling camera in history? Even the mighty BH Photo is out of stock.

Not 'history' in its entirely, I believe, but up till today, maybe.

In the past the 350D was a hot seller and it was going for about the same price new as the 40D now. The thing about the photography scene is that cameras are becoming more capable and more affordable than ever. Thus more people seem to be taking up photography as a hobby. Even if this is not the case, plenty of people are buying a camera just to have one in the bag.

Future consumer models are likely to garner more sales than any of the current models. That's my two cents, anyway, worthless in the grand scheme of things.

Just a thought..

Since they just come out with the LIVE LCD on the first two Canon SlR's in history, I wonder when they'll add the live video on there?

Oh back to the question, I am not sure if the 40d will be the biggest hit but it sure does seem to be taking a toll on everyone. Like others say, you can't even find it anywhere because everywhere is sold out! For this, I am saddened by! I have never in my life owned a SLR and the first time I try to buy one that have special kind of features such as the LIVE LCD, go figure. Oh, I am such a cry baby! Well, I ordered this camera through Amazon on Thursdau and it won't get here until the earliest Oct 9th... :( Ok my drama is ending now :)

The 40D will certainly do well but don't forget that there are many more options now than when the 350D was released.

The lead Canon had over its rivals has narrowed at least in consumers eyes and there are more new competitors in the game.
I still think Canon produces better images than all the other manufacturers but new DSLR users will have a tough choice. Cameras with body stabilisation and higher pixel count may sway their decisions even though we know these things are not necessarily good.

We, the consumers, will benefit from the new competition as this is what drives progress. The only problem is being temped by all the new goodies.

I'm in Seattle and the 40D has been very difficult to find at any of the reputable online stores such as B&H, Adorama, Ritz Camera, Amazon, and for that matter any other store that does not have restocking fees, grey-market warranties, etc.

"Samy's Camera" web-site currently says "This item has yet to be released by the manufacturer. We are currently accepting pre-orders."

It seems that a few stores received a shipment of 40D's right after Labor Day and sold them very quickly but there have since been no reports of additional stock anywhere. All of the retailers I have spoken to including B&H have no idea when more will come in. I'm OK with paying full retail for the camera but would rather not shell out an additional $110 for local sales tax.

Does anyone else on the forum have any more information on this??

While I agree with you somewhat, would you still switch to Nikon if they announced the same thing for their cameras 2 days later ;)?

"No self-respecting DSLR will be caught dead with a video mode", as DCResource says.

But anything that's possible will happen in the coming years...progression I guess.

It will depend on where the price stabilizes after they become readily available.

while I agree I did not think we would ever see a liveview feature either so lets not count it out :)

With nikon's live view using contrast from the sensor to focus they are actually one step closer to adding video to the SLR's. Over the last 4 years with a DSLR Ive read over and over, Live view- thats compleatly stupid, this isnt a P&S, Auto ISO- I wouldnt use it who needs its I want total control, Yet those features will be on all the models with in the next 6 months. Give it a year and a half maybe 2 years and we will see video.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.
