Can someone please give me some honest non sugar coated critique of my shots? Please keep in mind that my equipment doesn't allow for super close shots, also when the forum resizes my pictures they lose a bit of their sharpness.

Thanks.

I think the second shot is great, however loose the framing around the photos. Keep up the good work!

Both pretty good- nice compositions but don't like the frame. Both shots look a bit dark though.

MMM both a bit dark. #1 is to dark to see any good detail.
#2 nice composition but just a tad dark again.
The frame distracts your eye from the subject to much.
Apart from that good shots.

Underexposed, frame matches composition well.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

yes histogram shows well underexposed, sliding the R level helps a bit

Thanks guys.

I agree they are a bit dark, although they didn't look that dark on my camera. I've been playing with the aperture and shutter settings for the first time these past 3 days. It took me a while to get off of 'P' mode on my camera.

I believe I had the aperture setting at 5.0. Normally when I shoot in 'P' mode it selects 3.5-4.0. Which allows for a brighter picture, but also much less DOF correct? So I am trying to get a greater DOF so more of the insect is in focus.

I am using an 'ND' filter setting on my camera, which darkens everything. It says to use this setting when shooting macros w/ flash. So due to this my shutter speed is fairly slow at 1/50 - 1/100 depending on the subject. I tried shooting without the ND filter but the picture comes out way too bright even at the highest aperture setting and at much faster shutter speeds.

I tried lightening up my photos using the software that came with my camera, but since it is under exposed, it just makes the darkness more grainy.

Should I will try a slower shutter speed, or should I lower the aperture setting?

Thanks.
