Since everybody is trying to see how the image quality is on the 40D and even compairing it to the 5D, I feel the need to state why I still liked my 5D a lot more.

Ergonomics. The buttons, thier feel and spacing the thumbwheel size and placement, all of it was just better on the 5D.

Viewfinder. the 40D is a good viewfinder, but full frame is just awesome.

Weight. The 40D is too light with heavy lenses attached. A 5D with BG-E4 and a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS was balanced perfectly and even though it was heavy it was very controlable.

Thumbwheel. I know I already mentioned it, but it's a HUGE difference and the 5D's was larger and placed closer to my thumb and was just soo much better to operate. This is my main gripe about the 40D.

Those are the biggest differences I can see.

Now fi only the 5d would go down to less $ than the 40D! I was pretty close to going into hock to gett he 40D, but decided to save and wait for the 5D. I won't be able to get the new 5D (rumor or fact that this is coming?), but maybe the old model will go down and put it in my reach.
What can I say? I hate math, and conversion crap makes my eyes bleed.

WillO - I use 2 bodies for insurance. You'll notice 2 flash units and multiple lenses in my outfit as well. Wouldn't like to get caught short on a job - ESPECIALLY a wedding. :)

Because the 5D was, and STILL IS, an awesome camera. The mere existence of the 40D, or even the fact that my 40D shared the same Computrekker with the 5D over the weekend, does not devalue the 5D's contributions and photographic potential in the least. No justification is needed. :)

I agree with you lightstream. The combo you have is complete with FF and Fps. Good choices for all around shoooting. Congrats on the 40D. :)

Although i have put my 5d up for sale it is one of the best cameras iv used the size is just right and the controls are were they should be too.
i just find for my shooting the new 40d will be better (Jets and BIF ) but it will alwasy be a stella camera regardless of IF its replaced.
Rob.

Thanks, it's nice to finally find a combo that I'm happy with.

For those trying to decide, think about it this way: is there a specific focal length or focal range you want that you cannot get in EF-S? Do you want a 24mm FOV on your standard zoom? (something I haven't been able to get in EF-S) Do you want a particular prime that only realizes its true characteristics on a full frame sensor? Do you need the fps more, or do you need FF more?

I can't provide any specific answers as everybody's needs are different but this is possibly a good place to start from. If all else fails, like they always used to say on another forum I hang out on.......

BUY BOTH

.......I did ;)

I've been reading all the threads about the comparisons between the 40D and 5D and can't figure out why they're being compared. They're two totally different cameras. FF, different sensor and pixel size, different plusses and minuses. As the OP wrote, when posters write that the bodies are just about the same, they sure don't feel that way to me.

Before I purchased the 5D, I was waiting for the 30D upgrade. The 40D seems to be an awesome camera, but it still fits into the category it was intended which is the mid end prosumer range.

While the 40D is a good upgrade from a 30D, its still a prosumer camera, while the 5D is a professional body, although who really cares about that, its just words!

I know if I could choose again, I would be tempted by the 40D, but still end up with the 5D, im solely into landscape photography & I know the 40D + 10-22 will give the same FOV but it just doesnt feel the same to me, the FF sensor is exactly like film SLR's, the 40D may have an improved viewfinder but its still not the same, a 10-22 also doesnt have IS, now some say its not needed on UWA lenses but I dont agree with that, try shooting at f/16 with a CPL & you will soon run into problems.

The other thing I never liked about a 1.6x body was the fact that to get a simple lens like a 50mm, I would have to buy a 30mm (usually a Sigma) which limits my choice.

Lenses like the 24-105L are out of the question as well, on a 40D its just not very wide, so where does that leave me? I guess I would have to buy a 17-40 & miss out on the IS, or go for a 17-55IS but lose build quality & I dont like all the dust problems with that lens.

As far as noise levels go, what we are seeing is comparisons not of what the camera sensor is capable of but much more of what the in camera processing is capable of! the Digic III chip obviously has a better NR algorithm which helps, but no NR is ever that good, im sure its at the expense of detail.

The main thing which is a little daft, is all these comparisons, they are both cameras aimed at completely different markets, so what if the 40D can get close to a 5D for noise levels, its still a 40D, its like saying a 5D can produce as good IQ as a 1D series, but its NOT a 1D, those that own 1 series would say "so what?" they purchased the 1 series body for a reason.

While we are talking about noise, a recent 400D vs 40D revealed that noise levels are roughly the same, so how come nobody has said in the past a 400D is equal to a 5D?

If you want a jack of all trades because you do a little of everything, I would say a 40D would be a good choice, but if your main focus is weddings, landscapes then the 5D remains the better camera, its just nicer to use everyday.

I like to see these tests, but I think if both cameras were the same price most people would choose a 5D, unless they particually needed the 1.6x crop, this is why we are seeing these comparisons, its out of the range of most people so they like to think their new 40D is just as good, if not better, but I urge anyone to try both & see which you prefer using on a daily basis.
