Why I still like the 5D over the 40D...(Non-IQ related)

I got my 5D only a couple of days ago so I _have_ to like it over the 40D :)

But seriously, I rented a 30D and a 5D a while back and since I was still shooting analog, I just couldn't get used to (1) the viewfinder image of the 30D and (2) the fact that suddenly I wasn't able to pick the right lens for a particular scene anymore. Over the years I've developed a feel for the field of view of each focal length, and with the 30D I was totally at a loss... I just couldn't (or didn't want to) get used to the crop factor.

And I also immediately fell in love with the way the 5D handles shadows - almost makes we want to underexpose each shot

Its like going back to the old days, but without the film ;)

Speaking only about IQ, the 5d is superior. When I look through the 5d archive and even the MKIII archive, those photos have an totally different look and feel than the 40d images that I have seen so far. Once you throw in high ISO performance, full-frame, etc it's not that tough a decision for me.

Its puzzling why the 40D is being compared to the 5D, perhaps its just because the new 40D has lower noise? but then Canon say its the same noise as the 30D, all a bit strange, its not a good comparison, they are in 2 seperate classes, it should be compared to other 1.6x bodies.

Cleaned it, with sensor swabs and Eclipse fluid, and the tin oxide coating began to lift off . . . .

Which Eclipse fluid did you use, the original or the E2 (which is supposedly designed for Tin Oxide sensors)?

I'm curious because I think the 40D also has a tin oxide coating just like the XTi does, so this kind of thing probably matters. If E2 took your coating off then it means that the Eclipse manufacturer might not make something suitable for these cameras at all, which would leave me wondering what to use for wet cleaning these cameras.

The 40D has a dust removal system but that's no substitute for a good wet cleaning.

Original Eclipse fluid, which is recommended for use on the 5D by Photosol :

Hmm...I don't actually understand why they recommend the original when the 5D has a tin oxide coating. Very strange indeed. Maybe not all 5Ds have the tin oxide coating?

Did you use their prepackaged sensor swabs to do the cleaning? If so, they claim to guarantee that it won't damage your sensor. And you used the fluid they recommend, so it would be an open and shut case (dunno what you have to do to actually collect on such a claim, though).

Anyway, I'd give them a call and ask them what they recommend in light of the fact that the regular Eclipse fluid took the coating off your sensor...

The MD of Photosol made a post a few months back on DPReview, discussing what to use for the 5D. The long and the short of it, is to use the original Eclipse fluid, as there were too many reported problems with E2.

Yeah i think its like apples and oranges too. Different strokes for different folks.

I prefer to shoot generally with the 5d also. It just feels better. I love my new 40D. I love the FPS and the fact that i now have 1.6 as well.

I personally havent really been dissapointed with the 24mm on the 1.6. i REALLLY really thought this would SUCK but I havent found it to be bad in general. I so nearly got the 17-55 but just felt it such a waste to get a lens that wouldnt go with the 5D. So im glad i stuck with EF mount 24-70. Now i may well need a 10-22 for wide and for a 1..6 cam but thats ok as i already have the 17-40 for the 5D.

Just my 2 cents worth.

I have not been tempted by the 40D even thoug it has great specs ( and pecks:p) because I am a happy FF'er. Once I got a DSLR with FF I was close to heaven ( Mk2 will put me IN heaven);):D

That's all there is to it for me , i..e FF v 1.6

Whenever I go out with my 5D it attracts some glances from other photographers nearby, infact just the other day a guy asked me "excuse me is that the 5D your using" well we got chatting & I had a look through his 30D VF as its been a while since ive used that cam, wow what a difference, you certainly notice the difference much more when all ive been used to is the 5D's VF.

Naturally he was utterly smitten with my 5D :p, quite a nice guy actually, but then most people are down here where I live, quite a contrast to living near London.

Funny, but I was at the park with my son playing around with the 40D. A guy was like "What camera is that?" and I'm like "It's my new 40D". And he was like "I've got the XTi", and I go "That's a great camera. I also have a 5D and 20D I use at home as well." Thinking this would surely initiate an intelligent conversation with a fellow shooter about the merits of these bodies which I was fully prepared to engage in, the guy simply looked at me for a second and then just walked off. I was like "WTF?". :(

You might have intimidated him by telling him you have more gear than him. :) I've also noticed that when people see your camera and they ask what it is, they just kind of like give you that wierd look and walk away. Esp, the noink users. :)

Ive mentioned a 40D and they seem to think its the lower model to the 400D as it has a smaller number... doesnt matter just funny how many people have really nice cameras but have NO idea what it is...

a friend of mine who is right into photography and shoots portraits of kids etc. with a heap of studio gear.. and by the way takes a beautiful picture... looked at me funny when i told her my new lens was a 2.8. ... "2.8? whats that..." i said fstop max aperture...

over the head.. i was thinking its pretty much the most important thing in photography as it seems to be the main think i manipulate.

I would get the Sigma 12-24 instead of the 10-22, it would be quite wide on your 40D but extremely wide on the 5D, almost fisheye without the extreme distortion, at least it can be used on both FF & 1.6x bodies, the 10-22 can only ever fit on your 40D, I prefer EF lenses in general as they can work on both formats, with EF-S its a one way affair

Strange people around, I know if I got my 5D out where I used to live (near London) it wouldnt be long before somebody would pull a knife on me, yes it really was that bad there, where I live now everyone is so friendly they say good morning to you as your walking along, at first it was a little weird, im like "huh? you talking to me?" with my always aware on guard London attitude :p
