if the 40D & 5D were the same price then conversations here would be VERY very different.

i'd say most general buyers & consumers would chose FF leaving the 1.6x crop as more a niche for long lens only users. for the ultra casual the dRebel would rule as it does now.

good point!

Naturally he was utterly smitten with my 5D :p, quite a nice guy actually, but then most people are down here where I live, quite a contrast to living near London.

I love cornwall , alsways have and not just cos its veryphotogenic - but the house prices - can't... quite... make... it......:-)

Cleaned it, with sensor swabs and Eclipse fluid, and the tin oxide coating began to lift off . . . .

bummer!

which Eclipse do you use, v 1 or v2?

Which Eclipse fluid did you use, the original or the E2 (which is supposedly designed for Tin Oxide sensors)?

I'm curious because I think the 40D also has a tin oxide coating just like the XTi does, so this kind of thing probably matters. If E2 took your coating off then it means that the Eclipse manufacturer might not make something suitable for these cameras at all, which would leave me wondering what to use for wet cleaning these cameras.

Original Eclipse fluid, which is recommended for use on the 5D by Photosol :

Hmm...I don't actually understand why they recommend the original when the 5D has a tin oxide coating. Very strange indeed. Maybe not all 5Ds have the tin oxide coating?

Did you use their prepackaged sensor swabs to do the cleaning? If so, they claim to guarantee that it won't damage your sensor. And you used the fluid they recommend, so it would be an open and shut case (dunno what you have to do to actually collect on such a claim, though).

Anyway, I'd give them a call and ask them what they recommend in light of the fact that the regular Eclipse fluid took the coating off your sensor...

that's why I haven't bougt any from them yet - it's too confusing , I mean if they don't know what is best how are we suppsed to know?

Anyway - didn't they guarantee it safe - can you claim from tem?

Yep I believe its the best part of the UK, except it does get more rain down here.

I dont regret getting out of London for one minute, everytime I went out back there all I saw was the yellow police boards, you know the ones? "Have you seen" saying a murder was committed on such date, a little further down the road & there was another, saying a serious assault, it was crazy!

London is getting serious!
My daughter had a close scrape down there recently and came home in tears (100 miles away)

If a little spec of dust/grit was on the sensor & he ran the swab over, that would surely scratch it.

I wonder if a good approach would be the following?

#1 remove lens :p

#2 use rocket blower several times over the entire area

#3 flip the mirror up & then use rocket blower over sensor area

#4 using a VERY soft & small brush, carefully blow & VERY VERY lightly brush over the sensor with just the very tip of the bristles, nothing heavy at all, so you just lightly dislodge any dust with the rocket blower blowing it away, might been 2 people for this, so one can brush, the other can provide a constant blowing, an air compressor would give a constant flow but could introduce grease if its not a filtered one.

#5 put it all back & check for dust.

Thats what I would do, but I might be wrong ;)

Yep, the thing that prompted us to get out of there was that first of all we didnt fit in anymore, where I lived 95% of the area was indian people, nothing against them, some were nice but its hard to speak to somebody who doesnt understand english & even harder to communicate with somebody who you cant actually SEE, (just the eyes showing you know), when I was shopping I felt as if I was in another country.

Another reason was my mother was walking back on her own from shopping one day when this big asian guy pulled a knife on her & demanded her purse, luckily somebody saw it & shouted out, he ran away, but this is hardly what I call a decent society anymore.

Its like another world down here, decent folk like it was 20 years ago.

I would get the Sigma 12-24 instead of the 10-22, it would be quite wide on your 40D but extremely wide on the 5D, almost fisheye without the extreme distortion, at least it can be used on both FF & 1.6x bodies, the 10-22 can only ever fit on your 40D, I prefer EF lenses in general as they can work on both formats, with EF-S its a one way affair

Cheers mate... never thought about this... didnt know 12 would be poss on FF, i always thought when referring to this it must be efs only type deal.

LOVE learning something new... thanks other Nick C :)

Looking it up now :)

Since everybody is trying to see how the image quality is on the 40D and even compairing it to the 5D, I feel the need to state why I still liked my 5D a lot more.

Ergonomics. The buttons, thier feel and spacing the thumbwheel size and placement, all of it was just better on the 5D.

Viewfinder. the 40D is a good viewfinder, but full frame is just awesome.

Weight. The 40D is too light with heavy lenses attached. A 5D with BG-E4 and a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS was balanced perfectly and even though it was heavy it was very controlable.

Thumbwheel. I know I already mentioned it, but it's a HUGE difference and the 5D's was larger and placed closer to my thumb and was just soo much better to operate. This is my main gripe about the 40D.

Those are the biggest differences I can see.

I am bored so going to reply to this

1/ Ergonomics, it is everyone to their own, but if you have driven an Automatic car, and a manual car the difference is massive at first, drive both regular, it is like a 2nd nature, you pick one up and shoot no probs and vice versa

2/ Viewfinder, VF on a 40D is an improvement for sure over all other 1-6's, but as you state FF getting on for £1k more for body, I would like to think it is better. Never looked through a 5D, but Like you and many others I believe you

3/ Weight. you compare the 5D with a grip, I take it you are not putting a grip on a 40D I don't find a lot wrong with my 40D with a grip on it, except with a 70-200 2.8, 40D and Grip with 2 battery's, it is damm heavy :(

4/ Thumbwheel, I like the Thumbwheel on 40D anyhow see 1/

5D is a great camera so everyone says, I don't disagree, 40D is a great camera for price and fair big jump on all other 1-6's,

heh you should get both, quite a combo, pretend the 40D is a sporty manual you need to learn to drive differently, and use for the thrash around on sunny weekends on the open fields, and the 5D is an auto, lovely, smooth and relaxing go anywhere sort of body :)

Yep, thats why I thought long and hard about what I am actually photographing, I have actually managed to do 90% of images with just the 24-105L, the other 10% are telephoto.

I make the most of what I have as I dont believe the comments made that we all buy DSLR's because we like changing lenses, we buy DSLR's because we can have a greater choice of lenses, but if I can do the same with 1 lens I will, changing lenses outdoors in less than ideal conditions is not something I find that much fun :p
