This is my first ever deliberate attempt at a portrait, Its my son Jamie. Comments welcome...

EOS 350D, Sigma 105mm f/2.8 (Macro), Natural Daylight. No Flash. + Photoshop (Soften)

Good exposure and good skin tones. Next time don't allow the subject to crush his cheek against his arm as it flattens his cheek.

EXCELLENT capture! The only tips I have for ya:
1) Leave a tad more head room...this is for cropping...if you wanted an 8x10 out of this it would be very tight on the top.
2) It's already been said, but have him raise his head just a lil to get his check back to normal. an easy thing to say is "don't put too much pressure"

Other than that I think you have done very well for a first time! Great lighting and skin color rendition.
