Got my 70-200 F4 L last week and tbh I am not that impressed by it. I know it may not be the Uber L series lens but none the less I thought I would get better results that I have so far. Seems too soft compared to others I have seen. I have tried to use it in the studio and also outdoors. Below are some images I took to test the lens out. If its buggered then it goes back to Jessops in the morning for an exchange

exif? I'm not seeing any problems really. The second on is a bad pic to try gauge your lens on because you focused on something that has 0 detail. (center of door handle) So of course everything behind that would be a bit OOF. 4th one seems ok as well, just not the best lighting.

They really don't look all that bad, especially if they were all taken handheld. Looking at your exif info, you're really at marginal shutter speeds to get sharp handheld shots.

Looks to me like it backfocuses very slightly. Try the focus chart:
http://focustestchart.com/chart.html (external link)
Do test on all focal settings on the barrel, there always is a little difference going through the different FLs.

Kind regards, Wim

Just thought of something. You say you have it on a tripod. How do you focus and shoot? You need to use a remote switch, either wired or wireless.

Kind regards, Wim

Hey again,

Shot with a tripod using the shutter release button. Exif is there, you may need to have an exif viewer to see it though.

Thanks for the link. Been looking for that so I can test my lens. Heres the results:

TO my opinion, it seems that you have a slight back focus issue.

It's definitely backfocusing. It's ever so slight, but it's there. Ideally, the focus target would be fairly close to the center of the focus field like it is with your other two lenses. In the case of the 70-200, the focus target is partially within the focus field and partially outside of it.

I'd exchange it if you have that option.

One more thing if I may add...

Please take some shots outside where the sun is behind you, not infront of you.
This lens is supposed to be one of the sharpest there is in the market today.
By the pictures I saw, it seems a bit soft...

Thanks guys,

Just got back from Jessops after exchanging the lens above. The one I have now seems much better and even the guy in the shop said the other looked soft on a 40D he tried it on. Will see how this one goes. THanks again for the help. Will post some images later taken with this new 70-200 F4 L

Good luck and enjoy your new replacement lens. Besides being the most inexpensive L lens in my bag, it is one of my sharpest (second only to my most expensive L).

Here is a full frame and 100% crop wide open (f4), ISO 200, 1/160 @ 200mm.
