No. The mirror is working normally but the shutter is jammed.

The point is another mkIII failure is being mentioned, my mkIII to be precise. I'm not happy having spent £3000 to have a shutter fail at 2700 actuations.

Thought I'd explain a bit more as i've seen another thread somewhere with a very similar problem.

Went to an airshow and while shooting a burst of shots the camera jammed up and displayed err99. Switched the camera off and took the battery out. After a couple of minutes put the battery back in and immediately the shutter sounded as if it fired a couple of times. Pressing the shutter again locked the camera up and displayed err99.

Took the lens off and its obvious whats happening, pressing the shutter raises the mirror but the shutters jammed shut and switching the camera on and off causes the shutter mechanism to repeatedly actuate but the shutter doesn't move so I reckon its broken!

Thanks for that. Just seen where you're from. I was at Duxford when the shutter died!

That's what warranties are for. I wouldn't concern myself too much. A shutter failing at 2700 clicks doesn't automagically make an epidemic. If photography's important enough to make you mad when gear dies, it's important enough to have a backup, no matter how much the primary gear cost. I'm sure there are Hassy H3Ds out there that fail as well. And they're significantly pricier than your beloved Mark III.

Sorry i just feel it is nothing but a mark III slamfest all the dang time, like no other camera has issues. Crap happens they get fixed under warranty and move on. My first mark III was error 99 out of the box shutter would not fire at all 99 period even with no lens. Returned it, my two mark III's i have now have been flawless and capturing beatiful images.

My Mark III shutter has problems too, after only 2500 or so shots taken. Really disappointing. Same problem as paul_g's. During a shoot a few shots started to show a shadow or dark area on the lower third, then the camera stopped working with an error 99 display. Did the shut down, removed and replaced the battery, but only clicking noises and the error 99 code. After calling the local Canon center, sent it in and am still waiting for their diagnosis and hopefully a refurbish or repair.

Paul go through your dealer rather than send it to Canon. I did and told them I was totally disillusioned with the Camera and would only except a new one. They took on the battle with Canon on my behalf and i got a new camera in 48 hrs.... Well happy..... Mine was err99'ing and had a noisy sensor cleaning action when turning on and off (this should be silent)

PS bought mine in June and was replaced last week without canon looking at it......

All the best

Well I think People have to look at a percentage of failures, for bodies sold, and reliability.

I see 40D problems only a very few, but how many bodies have they sold, Thousands all ready, I bet, wonder how many MK3 have been sold since it's release, I think it is good people report these things, it gives people an idea's of reliability, something that is very important.

Photographic Images on Brett Butler (external link) px500 (external link) & Flickr (external link) Some Canon Bodies , few blackish lenses, A dam heavy black one, couple dirty white ones, a 3 legged walking stick, a mono walking stick, and a bag full of rubbish
