If the above is true and you need the EVF covered i assume when using live view mode the camera takes this in to account?
I didnt read in the manual that the EVF should be covered when live view is active.
I always thought the EVF only needed to be covered when using long exposure times.

This problem doesnt normally crop up that often, or at least thats what ive found, but then even if im on a tripod my eye is never that far away from the viewfinder, so long as you dont have the sun pointing direct into the VF, ive never found ambient light effect the shutter speed to any major degree, I cant stand farting about with the rubber cover, its just as good putting your had up as a shade.

I'm gonna feel stupid for asking this, but...

Is the rubber thing supposed to stay on the strap when you use it? I can't get it to stay on the eyepiece for any amount of time, it just doesn't seem to fit... Feel free to insult my intelligence!

Slide off your eye piece first. Push it up with your two thumbs and then it fits just fine. Just remember to keep your eye piece safe.

Forgot to add. Yes, keep it on the strap, you know where it is, keep the strap side on the outside facing you.

Yep, its something that is bound to get lost if you use the rubber shield a lot, which you shouldnt have to, its not that common a problem, just develop a technique whereby you shield the VF from any direct light & your fine.

Look on the strap, it's usually on there

Don't feel bad -- Canon tries their best to make things difficult. If you look closely at the cover, you will see that it is meant to slide on from one direction, but they install it on the strap in such a way that you must turn the strap so that it crosses from the opposite side of the camera. The fix is easy -- remove the strap from the camera and then remove the rubber cover and reinstall it on the strap in the correct orientation.

I have not had any problem with the rubber cover falling off, BUT I have had problems with the eyepiece cushion falling off at the least provocation. I am surprised that I have not lost it yet considering the number of times that it has fallen off. I am considering some surgery on the cushion to improve the little wimpy plastic catches.

this is really interesting. So is it possible light is entering the viewfinder if you were glasses and not covering the whole area?

Look at the photo I linked to below.

In the upper right you see the little black square with "Canon" stamped into it?

I am possibly missing something but this truly is the most foolish design ever. Removing the eyecup every time and slotting on a little piece of rubber seems, while of course do'able, a very clumsy method that needs a rethink on *every* model.

At the moment, I'm just carrying a piece of 'Blutack' around and put that over. Works nicely for me.

BTW, I'm after an eyepiece extender to give better contact with my eye and reduce the amount of smudge on the screen. Would I be right to get the EP-EX15 for this? I.e, does it help?

Get a nose job :p
Im looking to get a LCD protector for mine. I have a Martin Fileds one on my phone and tried it on my 40D and it actually increases the contrast a bit and makes the screen a bit clearer (IMHO of course).
Just need to get one the right size now.

London. Centre of the universe

Hehe!! Great. Whenever something happens on TV that the american networks pickup (the Glasgow airport attack being a good example), it's always something like...

"..and in other news, Scotland has been attacked tonight. Glasgow airport in the US of K 400 miles north of London...."

you know the sort of thing.

An eyepiece extender will probably be more reasonable that a nosejob. Then again, Canon accessories can get pretty pricey :-)

Just wondering if it will help with the 2 things mentioned (better contact and less smudging).
