last attemp at this. finding out they are hard and my timing is way off. maybe i should have use a tripod.

Not bad at all Bill. These are extremely difficult (I haven't managed one remotely in focus yet...)

I don't think a tripod will assist much, just keep taking the shots. I'm impressed.

I'd say they're pretty good too. You got a bit of ghosting on a couple where available light has added on the light from your flash. I think you need to reduce the total light getting to the sensor giving the flash a greater proportion by decreasing either the aperture size or iso setting. I'm assuming you're using the maximum sync shutter speed for your flash.
