I am debating whether to upgrade from the 400d (XTI) to the 30D.

I have been using the 400d for ~6 months and like it, only problem is that it is a little small, but other than that it is OK. I got excited about the 40D but have decided that for the price, the 30D has all the features I need and is about £300 cheaper than the 40D.

My question is simple. Will the IQ and quality of pictures be better on the 30D? I know that it is 8M compared to the 10M of the 400d other than that, has anyone else gone this route. Does it make sense or should I wait, develop and then go for the 40D sometime next year?

how about trying the 400D with a battery grip -- perhaps that will increase the size so that its comfortable enough for your hands.

The 2 cameras have basically the same image quality (the 30D has a tiny bit less noise at ISO 1600). You're paying for features, ergonomics and a longer shutter life.

Thanks for the input. I am torn between buying new lenses or the new body which I hope will last me a long, long time, rather than upgrading to it in the future and having missed a couple years increased enjoyment in using it (if that makes sense). It might be a better idea to go to the 40D now and have done with it!!

I'm in the same boat, I want to get something comfier than the 350D, but can't decide whether to get the 30D or 40D. It is likely to the last upgrade before I get my grubby little paws on a 1 series, so I want to to last a couple of years. At DigitalRev, the 40D is only £160 more than the 30D...mmmmm?

dooooooo it. i upgraded from my 350D to 30D late last year and have NEVER looked back.

it is so much more comfortable to hold (bigger + rubberised grip), the rear dial is so nice and quick to use, the top lcd screen is so much more ergonomic (imo).

also, the viewfinder is brighter than the ***D series and the body takes a lot more abuse being a magnesium shell.

if you have the 400D, i think the focus mechanism is the same. if u have the 350D, there are 9 a/f points and a more sensitive f2.8 sensor.
