Speaking as a very amatuerish photographer - upgraded from the 350D to the 40D last week - and I don't care what they say - the camera CAN make a difference. My shots have improved very much since the change-over.
I've even gotten fond of the DPP program, which I initially hated.

Just my two cents worth.

nwyman,
That saying the camera doesn't make the difference is from the film days. However now with DSLR's this really isn't true. From different sensor sizes, to different sensor types, to different digital/analog filters, this can make a difference.
So enjoy your new 40D, as my eyes have found it to be a good camera :)

Couldn't agree more! Going from 400D to 40D I've seen a big improvement too, autofocus and noise levels are much better imo.

And that viewfinder! Amazing. 40D might not be the pinnacle of crop DSLR, but it must be close.

Paul

in this case, the viewfinder and fps probably make the biggest differences... you can actually see what you are shooting and double the frame rate (still no match for 1dmkiii in either of these, but for it's price, it's quite good)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

actually, I think the automatic ISO setting is helping me a lot. I couldn't ever get the shutter speeds I needed with the 350D. Shooting wildlife in the woods can be a dark and shady business!

I have found that every new purchase I have made has added incrementally to my general skill level - but I think it has largely been getting out there and practise, practise, practise - trying out the new gear!

My favourites have been getting the 10-22mm and the 430EX Speedlite. I am really looking forward to upgrading to the 40D soon.

I have a big problem with the 40D.

I moved from the 300D which was slow to turn on, slow to focus, and wouldn't track to save its life (I do still love mine though). Now I've got the 40 I'm getting more photos and I'm getting higher success rates as blurry stuff is a lot less common.

So, now it takes me twice as long to go through the damn CF card at the end of the day and figure out what to keep and what to delete. Did Canon not think of that when they made such a good camera???

Are you UK?????????

Because if you are, they can take a card, they just need to phone the office and process it, they don't like doing it, BUT can if pushed

You guys are killing me. For sure Israel will be the last place on earth to get the 40D. Just after Antartica. My camera store says two weeks. So if you could all just shut up for a while I'd appreciate it. :)

the guy gave my wife the number then drove off, he would only leave it if she paid cash or cheque, sooo close.
I'm now having to work from home tomorrow so that i can be there for pick up as my wife is out all day.
I had so many plans for the evening with my new camera, starting with a nice walk by the river followed by a late night gazing at the stars, what it night it would have been.

I keep telling myself it's not the body, it's the other stuff that makes better photos. Now thanks to this thread this belief is gone. I might have to get one myself to prove myself wrong...
