Weather Proofing... or lack of.

Quick question... I just bought a DRebel and don't obviously want to damage it. I've read threads about how people bring extra gear with them on shoots (bug spray, tape, poncho's, etc.). Can anyone tell me the durability of the DRebel should it rain? I'm not going to sink my new camera in a bucket of water but how should I protect it if it starts raining out? Run for cover?

I would suggest getting a water resistent/proof camera bag.

get a lowepro AW bag, any AW bag will be fine, then get some "raincoat" for you big lenses, if you don't have long telephoto lenses, you can just wear something water resistant and keep your camera under the coat, only take it out to shoot when needed.

For carrying around, just about any good camera bag will work. Otherwise, it is kept underneath your jacket.

If you have to take it out and shoot during the precipitation, then the intensity matters. I have shot lots during a light snow flurry and even during a light rain, if it is just a few drops of water hitting the lens barrel. If it is really raining, then I have a transparent shower cap that fits over the whole works even with a long lens. I can let just an inch of the lens front stick out from under it, and my hands are kept dry around the body. If the rain gets awful, you probably won't find that many subjects anyway.

That works too, but I always pack 1 or 2 large plastic trash bags in whatever case I am taking. They take up virtually no room, work just fine as trash bags if you need them , but more importantly provide a quick place for camera gear and bag if a downpour catches you. The 2nd bag can be converted to a "fashionable parka" if you choose to stay out in the rain as well.

A lot of us that do video work simply use trash bags. Seems to work as good as an expensive rain cover. They are easy to transport, configure to your camera in a hurry.

A bit more fancy than garbage bags, or shower caps....
