Not a big deal but…

On my old 20D my main file would always change after a certain amount of photos were taken…ex.. 111CANON..112CANON.

But on my 30D my file numbering is set to “Continuous” and the main file never changes… it’s just stuck at 188CANON..

Any info is appreciated..

The number you’re talking about is folder number.
Camera automatically creates new folder when the old one is full.
IIRC, 20D creates new folder every 99 shots, and 30D every 999 shots.

In a nutshell: File numbering on your camera is not stucked. Just keep shooting and it will change soon..

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

It's 100 shots for the 20D and 9999 shots for the 30D.

File numbering is covered on pages 70-71 of the 30D manual, including how to force the camera to start a new folder. Unfortunately, this also causes the file number to reset to 0001.

Thanks, I stand corrected!

as for 188, that is because you stuck your 20d's card in the 30d without formatting it on a computer first. that lead to 188 (i doubt you've taken 88k shots with 30d if you just realized the folder names where not changing)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

I have a similar question...

I bought a brand new 5d a few months back and i forgot to check the file numbering when i got the unit, but at around day 3 i looked at the file number and it had roughly around 7400 shots taken. (I know I must've taken around 300-400 shots within those 3 days.)

I had used an old CF card from my old G3 camera on the 5d (still using it), Do you guys think thats what caused the numbering to go to seven thousand (plus or minus)?

Was I sold a super used 5d? The unit looks Mint. Not a scratch or wear even on the strap mounts.... Its making me think that my less than perfectly focused shots are not user error but camera wear. ( I'm hoping to hear the answer I want.... which is the camera is new and I should just move on and take more photos. :) )

5D + Grip --- 70-200mm 2.8L IS --- 24mm-70mm 2.8L --- 50mm 1.4 --- 100mm macro --- 580exII --- Kenko 58mm CPL --- Pringles can Diffuser for macro :) --- Manfrotto 190xprob Tripod --- Manfrotto 488rc2 BallHead --- TC-80N3

If you didn't reformat the G3 card in your computer before you put it in the 5D, than that definitely threw off the numbering.
