I hope for Nikon that the D300 is a better camera than the 40D because the $600 price tag difference between the 2 models is really important. Well.. It will not be important for Nikon shooters which have been waiting for this but the price tag will be important for new buyers. Beside the functions and all the goodies, the image quality between the 2 models will be pratically indistinguishable. Nevertheless, reviewers ans users will compare the D300 to the 40D and for me it isn't a fair battle. Nikon has been been very wise with the D300 because it belongs to a niche where Canon has nothing to compare with.

I won't switch to Nikon because of one particular camera. I'm still partial to the build of Canon lenses (especially L-glass) over the Nikkor lenses.

I love these types of posts.....

Surely someone who uses Canon is not going to jump ship on the back of one or two cameras...

Most on here with Canon camera's have extensive kit to go with it and swapping marque would be a huge cost....
As for the D300 being by your statements better than Canon's offerings, what are you comparing it to, same goes with the D3.... Then Canon's next offering will be better than Nikon.. So what you are suggesting is we play ping pong between Canon and Nikon.... yeah right.... Where is brand loyalty.....
It is the nature of the beast, someone will always bring out better kit..... and so it will go on..

Why does it seem that a lot of Canon users like nothing better than to find a reason to slag them off..... just makes me laugh.....

lol - perhaps. At any rate, the 40D is a smashing camera, and a massive upgrade from the 20/30D

If it were full-frame and had a Canon lens mount, it might have a snowball's chance in Florida (or other hot place of your choice) of drawing me away from Canon.

I still see nothing great about the D300. It hardly excites me and alot is to do with the buttoons. I don't like the layout of the D200 and byt the looks of it, the same goes for the D300. We are also talking about a much more expensive camera.

How many bodies you want to use at one time?, 2???

Well I dont really see anyone slagging Canon off in this thread, Generally a discussion about the new Nikons, I certainly like the specs on the D300, Specs and real World are of course Different

But me, like many have quite a lot of money tied up in Lenses, but what I don't want is Canon resting on their Laural's thinking No canon users will jump because of this.

I wonder though how many NEW first time buyers/ or buyers who have a low DSLR, with little Glass looking for a new System out there, buying semi Pro Equipment that end up buying a D300 etc. instead of a Canon each year.

Dekka, the D200 is another "looks good on paper" camera. In use though, it isn't nearly the camera the 30D is.

The D200 didn't get me to drop my entire Canon rig and switch to Nikon for nothing. It is twice what the 30D is, and if I had to chose between the 40D and the D200 right now, it wouldn't take me 2 seconds to think about it, D200 all the way.

Fully weather sealed, superior flash system (by a landslide), better skin tones than the 30D (not sure about 40D). On the weather sealing alone, I would take D200 over a 5D every day of the week.

I'm not knocking the 30D here, it is a good camera for what it is, but it does not have the features I need ... period. I don't care of I could pick one up for $15.95, if it doesn't do what I need it to do, it is little more than an awkward paper weight.

And the D200 is far better in real life than it is on paper. I was a Canon shooter for 14 years - I spent 1 hour with a friend's D200 and threw my entire Canon system up on EBay. It's that good.

I don't know how many of you have checked out the specs (or hands on review at dpreview) of the D300, but I find it to be an astonishing camera. Not only have Nikon seemed to sorted out their main weak point of poor high ISO noise, but they still have their superb metering / flash system, and now, they bring a pro level focussing system, a beautiful LCD, and more.

With the D100 Nikon were way behind. The D200 was right there with Canon, but if the D300 is as good as it seems, Canon have been caught wrong footed, and will have to play catch-up.

Will I sell all my Canon gear and move to Nikon? No. But, this competition has got to be good news for us Canon shooters, especially when the 50D is released in a few years.

I sure as heck won't be dumping any Canon gear PERIOD but will consider the D300 and one of Nikon's new fast primes (e.g. 500mm VR) in the future (everything depends on the outcome of Nikon hype versus user reality).

I'm in complete agreement with you regarding the "competition is good news" part. I just hope the D300 is successful and actually lives up to the high ISO hype; this is the only thing that will force Canon to be more competitive both from the standpoint of overall performance (where I actually have no complaints) and DSLR cost (things can always get better).

Regards,

Now here is a scenario i love to see happen.

Canon reduce all their L lenses by 50% to tempt new customers and to keep existing customers happy with the Canon system.

W00T!!! :)

It certainly wouldn't be more effort to weatherproof the 40D. I'd be willing to pay an extra 100 clams for weatherproofing. Let's hear it for competition! :) Go Nikon!

if the D300 can focus better and more pricise than the 40d i might be tempted to get one and maybe a 80-400 vr . if review's start saying so.
a lot depends on the outcome of my mk3 working right when i get it back, im not saying i will jump ship Altogather but im not to happy with Canon at the moment
Rob.

The D300 should move the standard for LCDs forward in a big way. The DPReview preview has a D300 screen compared to a 40D screen. The pictures can be enlarged over on the site and the comments also note that the D300 screen line the pixles up like an LCD monitor where as current camera LCDs stagger the colors. Here's the relevant page that the two attached small photos came from and where the screen is further discussed: http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond300/page3.asp (external link)

Perhaps Canon will counter attack with a body that will fill the niche between the 40D and 5D and bless us all with a 3D. ;)

This year has been full of surprises no? Makes you wonder what lies in store in the future...
