I'm a bit worried about my new 5D, it's been behaving strangely and I'm concerned that there might be something wrong with it.

A few weeks ago I was shooting when it completely locked up. I couldn't do anything. On the LCD it wasn't showing the Av and the rear dial wasn't working. At first, I thought I might have selected ON instead of "_/" by mistake, but I hadn't. I removed the lens and checked the contacts were clean but it made no difference. The only way I could get the camera to work was to remove the battery.

Then, yesterday when I was shooting, the mirror kept locking up and would only return by pressing the shutter release a second time. (mirror lockup was definately disabled!).

Has anyone had similar problems? Should I get in touch with my dealer?

Hi Total - sorry to hear about your 5D issues. To be honest I don't have a clue what your problems may be. I'm not sure what you mean by "on the LCD it wasn't showing the AV."

All I can suggest at this point is to remove both of the batteries for around 10 minutes or so, making sure the main battery is fully charged and the other is good before reinserting. I admit this is grasping at straws, but maybe it's something in the main IOS setup and needs a total reset. Just my .02

Sorry, that wasn't very clear. What I meant was that it wasn't showing the lens aperture on the top LCD panel, it was blank. I couldn't change the S/S or fire the shutter. :(

If you have the first problem again - try pressing the DoF preview button.
Mine had the exact same symptoms when it was new - turned out the aperture was "sticking" stopped down. Every time it happened I'd press the DoF button a few times 'till it let go, and after 5 or 6 times it quit doing it and has been fine ever since. I'm guessing the button contacts were just barely touching and by exercising the button it opened them up.

I had this happen to my 5D once during a wedding. I had an extra rented 5D along as backup. Removing both batteries solved the problem and it never happened again so I haven't done any more research on it. I thought it may have been caused by the grip.

Ok, I've removed both of the batteries and charged them. I've also gone through and reset the custom functions, registered settings etc.. and set up the camera as if it were new. We'll see what happens, it might have been just a one-off.

I'll post back with any news and thanks for all you help!

I had that problem to once during a wedding... the flash did not fire and the camera locked up... i attributed it to the lens connections... i pulled out the battery also, and reset the lens... after that i haven't had the problem again. weird.

Excellent suggestion about the DoF Prev button - I never would have thought of that one Colt :D..... don't know if that's the root cause but it certainly can't hurt. Btw, welcome to the forum - hope you stick around. There are really a lot of good people here to share with. - Stu
