Saves me about $600 in upgrade and I still can't SEE a difference in quality! If if one does, it is totally ANAL!!!

You don't quite get it do you, the AF system alone on the 40D over the 30D means you have a higher keeper rate, thus you may have that shot that the 30D would not have got, especially in low light, that is a fantastic difference in quality.
I can actually see the focus in the VF now over my 30D in some cases.
There are loads of reasons why the 40D is better than a 30D

Not that it cost me £300-00 more, in fact it only cost me £200-00 more than my 30D did
30D great camera 40D a better camera, and well worth the difference.

Of course I guess it is all down to what you take photos off, and if you want to improve.

100's of posts say the same thing I am afraid

there is also functional vs quality. As a 20D owner, I have been very disapointed with the keeper rate with AI Servo. Can't comment on the 30D in this area, but the 40D sounds like a worth while upgrade so far.

With both the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 and the 100-400 L, keeper rate is the same. 40D will be in my hands shortly.

The quality of shoots in your link, they all look wonderfull, now have someone move the image around, and back and forth

Mate if you're happy with a 30D then that's just great. But believe me it's not just down to quality - I own both and let me tell you the 40D is a better all round DSLR and a worthy upgrade. The improved AF is worth the cost alone imo!

What convinced me was a post I read where I couldn't tell the difference between shots from a 5D and a 40D. I fought long and hard not to give in to my "gotta have the latest and greatest" disease, but lost. My 40D is now on order and one of my 30D's is on it's way to another member here on POTN after being sold.

for me the draw is that my xti kinda struggles with AF when my 35L is on....and this sounds like a huge leap in AF quality so that speaks to me.

Is it just me or do all of those photo's look like they have been through some if minimal post processing? Granted they are all fine images but eh well I have a 40D and I've seen ISO 1600 of the 5D neither of which were that noiseless at 1600 ISO...OOR it could be my computer screen just doesn't show the detail others do..that's possible hmm.

My wife wants to know why I need the 40D. I certainly hope all is true. I try to shoot birds in AI Servo... well, I get a few good ones. AI focus seems to work better. Anyway,
I'm going to scream if B&H doesn't get some more soon !!!

Noise is a function of exposure and DR of scene. The greater the DR of scene and the more underexposed, the greater noise any dSLR is going to have. Therefore, you can't really compare one set of photos with the other for PQ differences.

I have gotten some shots that have virtually no noise at ISO 1600....but that was with limited tonal range. The greater the range of colors the image has, the more likely it's going to have more noise at high ISO. Just generalizing from what I've seen....it does seem that the 40D has better ISO then the 30D. It may indeed reach the 5D: in the right hands, it has great performance at ISO 1600.
