LOL Jim, it will not be very noticeable in IQ difference for portraits between the 1.4 and the 1.8. At least not to the point you will be patting yourself on the back for paying 3X the amount for the 1.4. If you have to have the best IQ in 50mm, then I would say, if money is really not the issue, to go get the 50mm f1.2L that would be much better in IQ in either the 1.4 or the 1.8. However, it will be 10x the amount of the 1.8. Then there's the 35mm L... "Ne nuntium necare"
