So, those of you who went out and shot action (BIF/sports) with the 40D, how did it go? How does the 40D rate with smaller/erratic targets? Did AI servo do much better vs 20D/30D?

TIA

I posted my very first successful bird in flight shot on the bird forum yesterday. Never had the opportunity to use a 20/30D, so don't know how they compare, but it sure beats the pants off my XT.

Go to the bird forum and search for
BIF with the 40D
to see the result

I was pleased

I used mine to shoot fast moving roller skaters in poorly lit rinks during Roller Derby bouts. I had been using a 30 D and 85mm F1.8 lense with about a 10-15% keeper rate. With the 30 D, it seemed I could never get a 5 shot sequence without at least one or two shots in the middle being out of focus. It did better shooting right down the straightaway with the skaters coming at you versus in the corners where their relative velocity to the photog is changing rapidly. With the 40D, my keeper rate is now 60-70%, and it works equally well in the corners and on the straights. There is a noticable difference between the 40D and 30D when it comes to focusing ability based on my firsthand experience.

Seems to work quite well. My guess is nine cross hair AF points and DiG!C III are good things. :)

I've been reading many topics on the 40D, hoping for comments and/or samples of AI Servo in action. Why didn't I think of starting this thread, oh well, here now.

thanks for the comments bsmotril, I would guess my keeper rate around the same with my 20D as with your 30D.
Sounds great the increase your now getting.

I was starting to believe I would need a 1D mIIN to get 60-70% keepers.

Look forward to hearing more comments on the AI servo on the 40D.

Hi AeroSmith,
When you shoot a burst in AI Servo, how many are in focus?

BLUF, AI Servo works great.

I post some shots of my son playing in the park later on. You know kids running around having fun is tough to capture sometimes.
