The early chat seems very favorable toward the D3 and D300. The D3 sounds like an especially nice all around camera. I'm not considering switching yet. I switched from Minolta to Canon when I was shooting film and never regretted it. If I were just starting out I don't know which system I would buy.

Fortunatly (or not) my budget and wants will have to wait a year or so for a major purchase. By then maybe I'll have a new offering from Canon that suits me to a tee.

I for one am glad to see the advances in the new cameras released in the last few months, but I am still very happy with the capabilities of my Canon gear. (It still performs as well as it did before the release of those new cameras.)

It's a great time to be into digital photography!

When people can actually hold one in their hands and shoot with it, and are happy with the pictures then we'll know how far Nikon has come. Nikon's reputation for press release to actual product in hands has been well, weak.

People still compare the D300 and the 40d for some reason. There is a $800 CDN price difference on them - apples and oranges.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

Yeah and for some reason compare the D3 to the 5D even though the D3 is roughly twice the price

I have read reports from pros that love the D3. They are using them now. Go to sportshooter.

I'm not saying it's bad, just that it's in whole different league to the 5D

If people can afford to chase after systems simply because of new releases, more power to them. I think you'll find that the pros, who have a lot of time, energy and money invested in their systems are not going to be so easily swayed.
