There are now 3 new cameras from canon, which one is the best of the 3, say in noise performance, and AF focus, 1D MKIII, 40D or 1Ds MKIII?

I am happy with my 30d, 5D, 1D MKIIN and 1Ds MKII and not sure what another new camera to add [for sure 100% not 40D;))

That may well be. :) But, I don't think I'll ever go back from a 1 series body. :)

Mark- What do you find so special about 1 series bodies? I love the autofocus on the IIN but there is so much not to like on the 'older' bodies. 1.3x factor, stupid battery system, terrible user interface that feels like you are pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL to change settings. Yes it's got a great build quality and is weather sealed but I find the 30D to have a better overall interface (needs ISO in viewfinder) and it doesn't compare to the Nikons for ergonomics, interface, or flash.

I realize some of this only applies to the IIN like the crop factor, but although it's allowed me to capture some ISO 1600 sports images that no other camera at the time could have done I can't say I like the camera. I just like the images it takes.

Nikon D3, D300, 10.5 Fisheye, 35 f/1.4, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.4, Zeiss 100 f/2, 105 f/2.5, 200 f/4 Micro, 200 f/2, 300 f/2.8, 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, SB-800x4, SB-900, SU-800, (3) Sunpak 120J (2) Profoto Acute 2400s,Chimera softboxes, (4)PW Multimax, (6) C-stands, (3) Bogen Superbooms, Autopoles

I like much of what you dislike - the battery system seems fine to me. Lots of exposures, sealed battery, fast charge. Could it be lighter, sure - but it's not a big deal.

The menu system seems logical to me as well. The two button process means nothing gets changed unless I absolutely want to change it - which I can't say about the other Canon cameras.

The 1.3 crop seems to me to be the best compromise between the expense of full frame and it's larger pixel size and the reduced cost, but extra reach of the APS sized sensors.

The extended functions, dual card with backup capability, 45 point AF, Personal Functions, ability to set custom image names, etc., are what make the 1 series my choice. My next camera, should one of my existing cameras fail will be a 1DsMKIII - but until I have a camera failure, I'm sticking with what I've got.

I shoot with a 1D2N also but wonder why you don't include the D300 along with the D3 as besting the 2N (going on specs only of course).

I didn't even consider the D300 to be perfectly honest. That camera is definitely a top contender for best bang for buck performance. I guess we'll know if the hype is real when these things ship and reports start coming in from the field. Looks like the D300 may already be shaping up to be "Camera of the Year", which seems to flip flop between Canon and Nikon anyway.

Bosscat wrote in post #3911764 (external link)
Cause they'd hate to admit that Nikon may have one upped them.

They already have better flash and metering systems, so all that was left is focus and lowering noise.

Sorry, Mr. Cat Boss, but you're wrong. I've always acknowledged that Nikon had great camera systems. And if Nikon upped Canon by more than one body then I'll be the first to congratulate the company and envy the specs. However, that alone won't motivate me to switch systems.

ChrisBlaze wrote in post #3911929 (external link)
whoa buddy did you sell your IIN?

Only because I couldn't affort to get two. ;) I really needed a second body, so I figured sacrificing the 1D2N and some other stuff would help make that happen for me. I actually ended up with three bodies.

The 1D2N is a great, great camera.

Yes, I do, but then I'm not as fickle as you. :) :) I also remember you had a Nikon in your avatar once as well.

While I don't own the 40D, 5D or the MkIIn, of the three I would probably buy the IIn before the others. What would attract me to the camera is not the IQ but the FPS, AF system (including the ability to AF with my 100-400 and 1.4X TC) and the body build quality. My second choice would be the 5D, only because it's full frame and I'd buy the 40D if my 20D died...

All I'll say is try living somewhere cold (England for example ;)) and shooting 3 - 4 months of the year with gloves... You'll then appreciate the fact it takes two hands to change a setting. Otherwise you'll find yourself at ISO 100, F/22 at 8pm in the dark ;)

I have & use them both, although much less the F-2 these days. You want to start a new thread on it in "Accessories", though?

Tried and tested what systems? I've been shooting with Canon since my old 35mm Canon AE-1, Tareq. At what point did I ever switch or even tried or tested any other system? And if I did do that don't you think that I'd report my findings to my good friends here on POTN?

For all of you who don't keep up with current events, there was an explanation posted a while back why that Nikon logo was in my avatar and it had nothing to do with switching systems or testing anything. Sheesh!

Yeah, I remember. But you tarred and feathered yourself with that Logo for those of us who have a long memory. :) :)

Don't mind Tareq, though......I don't think he keeps up with anything outside of the equipment forums. :)

Eh? Tareq's my good friend here on POTN. He's a little... ya know... "not quite right", but he's a good little fella... mostly.

Mark, I've got a long proud history of putting my foot in my mouth here on POTN, old friend. But thanks for the reminder. ;)

As my good friend Jon the moderator once said, "Hubris is good". Curse you, Jon! https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?p=1630152
