I like much of what you dislike - the battery system seems fine to me. Lots of exposures, sealed battery, fast charge. Could it be lighter, sure - but it's not a big deal.

The menu system seems logical to me as well. The two button process means nothing gets changed unless I absolutely want to change it - which I can't say about the other Canon cameras.

The 1.3 crop seems to me to be the best compromise between the expense of full frame and it's larger pixel size and the reduced cost, but extra reach of the APS sized sensors.

The extended functions, dual card with backup capability, 45 point AF, Personal Functions, ability to set custom image names, etc., are what make the 1 series my choice. My next camera, should one of my existing cameras fail will be a 1DsMKIII - but until I have a camera failure, I'm sticking with what I've got.

Mark

I completely agree and after getting used to the MKIIN, I prefer using it over the 30D for weddings and events.

OK, I've got the 40D now, I'm going to try it out and compare it to the 1DMK2N.

I have to charge the batt, but even before that happens the LCD screen on this thing is huge!!!!

Also have both.......preferably I'd like to ditch the N (maybe get 2 40's), but the 40D has got to pass a few tests. Shooting some Motocross with it tommorrow, we'll see how it hangs with the N.

Ok, I spent the morning with the 40D and took about 400 shots of my dogs running up and down my back hill to test the AF tracking. My seettings are so that I use the * button for focus, it allows you to track on coming abjects much better than the shutter button.

Also, I was using my 24-70L as my lens.

Before I get to that (and waiting for the pics to upload to my smug mug account) I'll talk a little about the camera body and functions over the 1D.

Body:

OK, the 1DMKIIn is a beast of a camera. It's solid, heavy and gives the feeling that this thing could withstand a nuclear war and still come out shooting. It's heavily weather sealed and makes vertical shooting easy wit all it's controls.

40D - THis baby feels a lot like the 30D in that it has the sam shape and basic feel. It's very solid for a prosumer camera and offers a nice set up of controls. A lot of people feel that batt grips give this body style a better feel when vertical shooting but I don't necessarily agree. My hands are big enough that all O have to do is twise my wrists and I have easy vertical shooting. I have to reposition my hands on the 1D. The 40D is more weather sealed than its predecessors but it's no where near as tight as the 1D.

THe LCDs - the 40D trumps here because while it's only a half inch bigger, it feels like a giant compared to the 1D.

I find the view finder bigger and brighter in the 40D, but that could just be me.

All in all, both cameras have the ups and downs but in the long run I think the 1D trumps the 40D for being a lot more solid. (Also, I think I would miss the double memory card slots in the 1D - that's something I really really like about the camera)

AF Tracking:

1D - THere's not much more you can say about this camera that hasn't already been said...it's one of the best on the market.

40D - I was pleasantly surprised by this aspect of the 40D. It handled the ultimate test (my dogs running up my half acre hill) at full speed toward me. I
took a 40 shot burst of them running up the hill toward me and somethign like 2 or 3 were out of focus (and that was probably my fault). After taking those shots I feel that this camera would do well in any type of action situation.

Obviously the 1DMKIIn trumps the 40D when it comes to FPS - 8.5 vs 6.5.

All in all, the edge goes to the 1D in the AF Tracking and FPS. But the 40D wins for it's 75 shot picture buffer. The 1D only does 28 at max. This is a nice feature of the 40D because if you want to take a large amount of shots this allows for it. You'd be surprised at how quickly you use up 28 JPEG shots when shooting a softball game. The 1D has a buffer of 17-20 shots while the 40D has a buffer of 16 shots for Raw images.

Control:

This is very subjective, the 40D can be adjusted on the fly with one hand easily while the 1D needs both hands. THis is up to you, which ever you feel is better for you. I like both since I've gotten so used to the 1D's controls I can shift them on the fly.

High ISO performance:

In truth, both do pretty well in this instance. I turned on all the high ISO noise reduction stuff in the 40D and the 1D still matches it if not does better. (I've included pics)

Well, all in all the 1DMKIIn is a step above the 40D in all areas except - picture buffer, LCD screen size and MPIX count. But, the question is, is it worth the extra thousand you pay to get one? That's up to each individual user.

PS: I know it's not the best comparison, but I'm not a reviewer and I'm too lazy to go back and proof read for grammar and spelling so please forgive my typos.

also, all the pictures have had no PP done to them and are in JPEG form. Later I'll take some raw

I've tracked a few things on it. My buddy was riding his 4 wheeler up and down the street for fun. Tracking is very good in that situation. A slow moving to rapidly moving object. (500cc 2 stroke 4 wheeler can move quick) I won't post up shots because well..he's really hairy and didn't wear his shirt like an idiot.

mdrtoys, thanks for this.

wondering if u had in-camera noise reduction on for the 40D shots... seems to lack details but it does look cleaner than mark2n... could u post some 100% crops?
