MrChad,
For me its my updated 1.6 DSLR version of my 5D.
They are neck and neck with photo noise, color accuracy and size. The 40D smokes the 5D in price, :) FPS speed, AF accuracy. I am very happy with mine :)

After reading all of these, I can't wait to order the 40d...I just paid 200 bucks for my old time rebel xt(6.3mp) to get fixed...and I'll use this as my backup camera. But the 40 d in my hands will be like.....chocolate in my mouth!!! LOL

I used a Nikon D70s before, so I never had a Canon to compare to.
I like the feel of it, except for a few things. For some reason I find the on/off switch is a pain - I have long nails, and trying to easily flip that switch can be a challenge. I end up repositioning the camera to one hand and prying it on/off with the side of my thumb or finger, and it's just a nuisance. Also, with an LCD so big, I can't find a good way to carry or hold it that doesn't get my hands all over the darn thing. II've put it up until I get a screen protector because it's gotten so mucky from fingerprints. :P
Otherwise it's SO easy to learn and most of the buttons are right at my fingertips, and the ease of use is awesome. The woman who sold it to me in Best Buy hooked up their demo and kept chattering that she didn't know how to use LiveView, and without the manual I figured it out for her on the floor. Simple!
Definitely worth the cost, although I find that the extra features like picture styles aren't really useful for me yet, but I'm not going to spend so much money on a camera and -not- try all its' functions, so I'm still using them. :D

John B- I think you are DEAD wrong in saying the noise performance of the 40D is "neck in neck" comparable to the 5D... I will be posting a report shortly comparing noise with the 40D and its no better than the 30D. give me until tonight and you can look at the images yourself.

As far as the IQ goes, I've not had a chance to give it a proper workout yet so I'll withhold judgement until Adobe has camera raw for it and I've gone to the Grand Canyon or somewhere decent. But just messing around, can't see much of an improvement over my old XTi.
Dislikes: On/off switch.
Buttons along the bottom. I keep hitting them by accident.
Top mounted LCD. Just don't like 'em, and wish that Canon had used the
info system like on the XTi.

Likes: Ergonomics--size, weight, sturdiness
Live view (a cool thing is to check your white balance in real time)
Speed is unreal
AF is incredible
LCD scren is big.
Pop up flash has its own motor
I think I'll like the menu system better once I get used to it. It just takes a while to get familiar with a new toy. I think I'll like it once I do.

I just got the EF-S 60 macro and AF works well even at macro distances...

I've been trying to get shots of my baby's hands and using AI focus with all points active it tracks really well considering movement and such :) (at varying macro ranges from 1:1-1:5 depending on how much his hand is moving) :)

I've been REALLY impressed by the AF... also coming from the 20d the bigger buffer is nice....

the shutter sound is loud and annoying.

I thought it was supposed to be quieter than the 20D?

Can I just say I like the camera without offering an explanation?

Hmm what happens when the 40D get's replaced so many times it's now the 290D what will they name the next one?

That's when I will be able to say I have the latest model Canon -- 300D!

As much as I like my 20D, my new 40D beats it up bad in evert category.

But you want to know what feature gives me the MOST JOY?

C.Fn IV 4 - Dial Direction during Tv/Av :)

Now, if the Exposure Indicator is too far to the ---> RIGHT, I just turn either wheel to the LEFT <--- and SHAZAM! all is well with the world !

sadowsk2,
Your entitled to your opinion but its wrong to my eyes and my cameras. Click the 5D vs 40D in my signature, its where I did an ISO 1600 wide open aperture test with 100% crops of the 5D and 40D.
