John B- I think you are DEAD wrong in saying the noise performance of the 40D is "neck in neck" comparable to the 5D... I will be posting a report shortly comparing noise with the 40D and its no better than the 30D. give me until tonight and you can look at the images yourself.

I was of the same opinion until I did my own test with all setting equal, found the 40D to be just as good as the 5D even interpolated to the same size.

your 40d is faulty then... or (and no disrespect meant to you here, but) you may need a lesson in exposure. The 40d is not as lenient on exposure as the 30d - so a bad picture does look bad. ( the 10.1 mgp will do that )

my 40d beats my 30d in every way i can see.. (not that i hate the 30d - it has allowed me to take some excellent photos) but the 40d is in a different class.

and when adobe have the raw editing sorted - the test images a have now will be improved again.

I dont like the shutter sound and associated camera vibration, but admit its smoother than the clunk of the 20D. I am also needing to get used to the rearranged buttons on top for iso and mode.

The focusing accuracy is clearly better than the 20D - no doubt about it.

the big lcd is actually kind of unnerving. In a dark envoronment, it lights up like an SOB as compared to the 20D.

I picked up a 40D as backup for my Africa trip this month. Played with it some and it seems like a pretty good tool for $1250.00.(sold the 28-135 to a friend for $250.00) I don't plan peeking at it's pixels or timing it's AF speed. I just wanted to do some photography with it.
I suspect it will work.
