That's certainly debatable.

I don't see this as a gearhead forum, per se, but rather as a place to discuss equipment and how to get the most of your equipment, both the latest and greatest as well as the oldest. The idea is to help people become better photographers by helping them to understand how their gear works and how to best utilize that gear for a given shooting situation - not to always suggest they get the latest and greatest to solve the problem. :)

Mark

true...:D but those people that you are refering to are not gearheads. They can live with a 2+ YO camera. Gearheads can't. They don't come here to talk about refusing to buy a new lens because they are being told its better to buy the wife new diamond earings instead...I don't think so.

Hardcore gearhead= New is out, If I can afford it, I will want it. If I can't, I'll sell my wife's jewlery and get it.

Mark You are MOSTLY correct though...

Snir-
very refreshing thread among all these endless 40D and MkIII threads. I currently have a Rebel XT. It's not the best, but even though I would love a 5D, I am focusing on getting the most out of it, because it is a very capable camera.

Dekka and others, I think you guys are a little out of line.

Canon EOS digital cameras: everything about digital EOS cameras.

That is the title and description of this subforum. Everything about EOS cameras. This thread falls directly into this category.

dekka. if you feel that this subject is in the wrong sub forum. why don't you click that little button at the bottom of her post, and ask the mods to move it if you feel so strongly about it.

i for one feel it is in the right place, and blonde was just sharing their opinion/rant/or whatever you want to call it with the rest of us. about.... yes you guessed it.. canon eos cameras.

to OP. you have some really great shots on your wall. keep up whatever you are doing, and i hope you post some pictures of your wall in the near future.

In my latest edition of "The UK's Best Selling Photo Magazine" there is a seven page article discussing the pro's and con's of budget vs pro D-SLRs.

The article compares the Canon 400D, Canon 1D MK111, a Nikon D40X and Nikon D2XS.

The verdict and final paragraph of the article:

"For most of us, an entry-level D-SLR will get the job done just fine. And the great news is, they take excellent photos too - image quality from entrance-level D-SLRs shows barely any difference to their pro counterparts".

It seems that if you can afford the best - buy it and enjoy. If you can't - don't worry, you'll still take great pictures :D

So what your saying is a 1DsMKIII will have an image quality like the 30D and the results will be the same? Now that one just cracked me up...
No matter how bad of a photographer you are, you will get a better image by using the better camera.

You can buy image quality.

That's all you can buy, though, agreed?

Agree. Thought a 40D and 5D might have been mentioned, but now that seems a little too high tech. Since he started only two years ago, the good old days was what, 1D Classic and 10D? :)

Oh, and I do agree to a point with Snir. It is starting to seem to me that bodies and new P&S cameras (G9 for instance) are coming out at about the regularity of software updates. On the plus side, like the 40D and the MIII, there are feature set additions that totally provide a degree of competitive edge for the professional. Wish lists are becoming reality much more quickly as manufacturing evolution supports change. Turning plant and equipment around to make design changes isn't as big a deal as it once was. Lots more effort required ahead of making those changes though by manufacturer. We see that with RAW left off the G7, quickly followed by G9 with RAW. I think we'll see the MkIIIn very shortly (2nd Qtr 08 maybe).

I still shoot film up to 8x10 to help maintain my perspective on equipment (of course my Wehman (2006) is like the Jeep of 8x10 cameras).

i have a mkII coming and a 40D (i placed the order last week) but we will see if i keep the 40D or just sell it and stick with just the mkII. as for the classics, i started with a 350D but i did own a 1D classic that was a rocking camera. i owned just about any camera in the canon lineup except for the 1Ds series and out of them all, the 1DmkII is the one that gave me the most "keepers" for some reason...

You can't buy a quality image.

No, but you can buy potential to produce a quality image.

The D30 + 50/1.8 can (and has) produced some stunning images.

The 1DsMkIII + 50/1.2 has the potential to produce incrementally better images, assuming the idiot behind the viewfinder can work the tools properly and has the "artistic vision" to make a good picture.

The 1DMkIII + 300/2.8 IS can produce more "keepers" from a fast paced sporting event than a 400D with the same lens, if the photog already understands the dynamics of shooting such events.

Sadly, few people ever live up to the potential of their gear (myself included).
