btw, i don't want people to think that i am against nice cameras with nice features. my point not that you shouldn't buy a 40D if you have a 20D but more like that if the 20D is giving you everything that you need, don't be tempted to upgrade just because everybody is doing it right now. look at the features and really ask yourself if you need them. i know that in the mkIII, i was very excited about all the new features but when i finally got it, the only feature that i actually used was the longer lasting battery. i didn't need the live view, highlight priority or anything like that.

I guess if you are a sports shooter or something there may be advantages to upgrading, but I am with the group that has decided to save my money a little longer. I will be getting the 5D or it's successor, but not for several months I think. I still have a lot to learn about my gear... all of it, not just the camera body. I will be more likely to go into debt on glass anyway.

is 6-8 fps really that slow that all of a sudden we MUST have 10fps to get the image?

I had to chuckle at this. A "few" years ago I was out taking pictures. Digital was in its infancy, I was using a film camera. 6fps. I setup the tripod, plugged in the remote release, and powered on the camera. The camera started clicking away - before I realized what happened I had gone through 36 exposures. I had inadvertently locked the remote release in the "On" position prior to turning on the camera.:o

Too bad I didn't have 10fps back then - I could have had 36 lousy shots in half the time - that's progress!!

I'm not a gear head, but I do enjoy reading about the latest. In fact, one of my all time favorite threads is Blonde's picture essay when he received his 500. I wish he would just get that 600 so that we can have another thread!:D

Snir, I have read your bird photography essay and have learned alot from it. Infact I savoured it. I would buy a book from you if ever you decide to make one, thats for sure... BUT, because of this, I now crave a 500MM! THX!

Since your bird photog lover and I am not rich, do you think the Bigma 50-500mm(Sigma) would cut it in terms of IQ or any other lens under the $2K mark??? I really can't afford a 5oomm "L" for the time. I still have to get my 5D.

Thx

some of my best shots were and still being made with the canon 100-400. honestly, if i was forced to give either the 500 or 100-400 up, the 500 would no longer be mine.

Hardware is great ... I love hardware. But (the big but), we are all after the "exceptional image", regardless of what we shoot. Good hardware, expensive hardware, (typically) makes it easier to get that exceptional image. It would take a lot more work for a P&S to get a shot equal in "exceptional" value as say .... a MKIII. 10FPS and good timing will deliver more exceptional images of action/sports than just good timing alone. My two cents.

I agree kinda of.

It is not the camera that takes the picture, but the person behind the camera.

I love gearheads.....they let me buy all their old gear!

That's it! Yes.

You can buy image quality, but you can't buy a quality image.

The best part about gearheads are their frequent fire sales so they can buy the latest and greatest...makes it affordable for the budget minded to have some serious upscale gear!

Nope, the best part is that at their fire sales the hardware is only slightly used.
