I noticed too...even our shots are reasonably similar :p I also have a 350D, 18-55, but swap your other lenses with a 50mm1.8, and a 70-200f4l. :p

Ah! Yeah, the first instant I saw your photo (before even looking at whose post it was) I thought it was mine, but something was not quite right about it, haha.

I am purchasing the 70-200 2.8 IS later this month (after paycheck comes in). I considered the f/4 IS, which is lighter and considerably cheaper, but made up my mind for the 2.8.

How do you people get that perfect white background when you shoot a picture?

Mine is far from perfect, but utilizing what I had available to me, I had the camera sitting on a light grey foldable table against a white wall and shined a fluorescent lamp to the front of the camera. I set up my Rebel XT with 50mm lens on a tripod and shot in Av mode at f/5.6 and ISO-200, which resulted in a 1/4 sec exposure - long enough for the light background to come out bright. But if you look closely, you can see the line of the back edge of the table against the wall. I applied levels and USM in PS and cropped.

There are also many ways by which you could "create" that perfect white background in PS if needed, but the real thing often looks better.

EDIT: In a sense, I prefer mrkgoo's photo. If you compare his photo and mine, even though I have a brighter background, his shadows are softer and the background is more uniform.

What is "PS"

Sorry! PS stands for Photoshop (from Adobe). Many people also use Paint Shop Pro to edit photos.

God this is too expensive. Where do people get all this money? It's like you can narrow your choices down to just a handful of cameras, but the lenses are so complicated that you need a week off of work to figure out what to get.

Well, true, it is a wonder for many how they manage to obtain the equipment they possess. Some earn a lot, some save wisely for what they want (and have patience), and some may be spoiled. But in the end, those who are willing to spend for this hobby (or profession) find it rewarding enough to justify the expenses. At some point you might even be able to make money from photography, whether you are a seasoned amateur or professional.

As for researching lenses, I start with reviewing my experience and skill and ask myself what is the next step I want to take, what will be my next purpose, what do I want to shoot, etc. Once I know what I want and/or need, I check which type or which specific lens(es) will fit this desire/need. I read reviews, participate in discussions, and compare prices to further determine what will suit me best. It is a long process, and I have found myself doing such research over several nights (and cutting on my sleep!) for pretty much every piece of photographic equipment I own, including cameras and accessories.

If you have a passion or appreciation for photography, (or any other hobby, for that matter), you will find in the end that the time and money spent are all worth it. So don't get discouraged! As long as you have an interest, there are always ways by which to get help and advice.

also don't forget that this is some peoples main hobby. which means that instead of buying a boat or anything like that, they buy nice camera equipment.
