I have a very basic question. Why can I not seem to get the 40D to reach it's full speed in taking continuous shots for sports? I honestly haven't taken the 40D for a true test run, yet since I've been sick since I received it a week ago. I have been playing with it a little bit, but I don't hear the shutter moving as fast as it should. In basic sport mode, is it possible or is it because of the low light in my room? In any of the creative modes, is it because my ISO setting is too low? In manual, I get the 6.5 fps but it's very underexposed.

I have set the mode to continuous shooting with an H.

If the shutter speed isn't fast enough then it physically isn't possible to get 6.5 FPS. Theoretically the minimum shutter speed is 1/6.5 (but of course the mirror has to move, and it has to focus, so it will have to be faster. But if you ignore all that) so at any shutter speed slower then 1/6.5 it will take more than 1 second to get 6.5 frames. Not sure if that made any sense.....

i had trouble getting it to fire when... shutter speeds are too low... ie exposure a bit too long.... also when i removed the noise reduction and highlight tone priority my buffer amound went from something like 15 shots to the full 75 - i thought it was my CF card being too slow... but you need the high shutter speed and the tweaks off as to render the image as fast as poss.. it wont be max indoors no matter what even at max iso the shutter speeds are too slow.

Id be keen to know from anyone else at what shutter speed does it fire at full 6.5FPS

Thanks... glad to know that I'm not the only one having trouble. I want to be able to take martial arts photos and the movements are very subtle, fast and hard to capture. I haven't invested in a lens for indoor sport, though... since I transitioned from a Nikon N6006 to the 40D, all I have to show for it is the kit lens. Should I think about a fast 28-75 lens. [f/2.8 or lower?]

Reign,

For indoor sports, you will need a faster lens to take in as much light as you can to increase your shutter speed.

If you're shooting at 1/4000 sec shutter speed and at 6.5 frames per second, you should be able to take 6.5 shots in approximately 1.001625 seconds. 6.5 x 1/4000 = .001625.

If you're shooting at 1/30 second (likely indoors), your shutter will be "open" for 6.5 x 1/30 or .216667 seconds during the sequence, so the total time to take 6.5 shots at that shutter speed should be about 1.21667 seconds.

It should be hard to detect the difference between 1 second and 1.3 seconds without sophisticated scientific equipment. So if you're noticing a substantial lag -- say, it's taking 2 - 3 seconds to snap off 6 or 7 frames at a relatively fast shutter speed -- your 40D probably does have a problem.

If you are short on cash, consider the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
