JWright thansk for the infomation. I will check out solution one. I have not tried than one.
I bought the 430 Ex and of course it is a great flash. It just would be nice to have the convience of the pop up for those quick candids when you travel light.

I understand but you're not going to get the same type of results with the pop up.

Folks, can we be a bit more specific please? What are you trying to do, and what is happening and/or not happening?

First, the flash comes up automatically only in the "green box", Portrait, Close-up, and Night Portrait modes. In the Landscape, Sports, and Flash Off modes the flash is disabled. In the P, Tv, Av, M, and A-Dep modes you have to pop the flash up yourself by pressing the button.

If the flash is making a clattering noise and you get an ERR 05, then the camera is trying to pop the flash up. In this case there is usually something binding in the flash mechanism.

If you're in P, Tv, Av, M, or A-Dep mode (with the camera turned on!) and press the flash button, the flash should come up unless there's a flash gun mounted. As dithiolium and JWright have noted, there's a microswitch in the hotshoe that tells the camera that there is a flash gun mounted. If you get absolutely nothing—no sound, no action, no nothing—when you press the flash button, it could be that the microswitch is stuck.

Here's a picture of the switch on an XT—the switch is black on the XTi/400D:

Poking around at the switch with a toothpick or similar can often free it up.

see mine is like intermitent.....when it does pop up it works perfectly....when it doesnt pop up I get nothing, no noise that its trying etc, it does absolutely nothing at all.....im getting really upset now!

b18turboef, make sure when you try to put the flash up that the camera is active. if the info in the viewfinder is not light/goes away or the back screen info is not showing. then the flash will not pop up. to make it pop up. click the shutter half way down to make the camera active. once you do that click the flash button and your all set.

hope that helps.

let me know how you make out,

joel

ok i fully understand that the pop up flash is nowhere near as good as my 430, hence why i bought the 430....but i have the mindset that IF i want to use the crappy flash i should be able to.....i didnt buy a camera like this so "most" of it would work, if that makes sense.....i also completely understand when the flash should be coming on in auto mode etc. and that in other modes you have to push the button.....but first let me say the button does absolutely nothing no matter what mode your in, and the flash RARELY tries to pop up even in auto mode....i can even turn off all lights and get nothing, it will actually try and use a 2-3sec exposure instead of activating the flash

As I've noted in my "deal of the year" my popup won't either...if I pinch the sides and pull while the motor clicks it will come up...and after a few tries at that it comes up on its own...but if it sits a couple of minutes it might not...I just tried it before I started this post and just now and my colleague sitting here remarked...whooooaaaaa, two in a row! But not a third, not now...oh well, a little pinch'll doya...and if I'm a bit late and the err 5 comes on I just turn off the power and back on with the flash popped up...
