Newbee looking for the best Digital Camera in the $1200-1500 range

Hi! I am new here and I need advice for the best Digital Camera in the $1200-1500 range.

Any comments? Thanks!

You don't need to spend that much, especially as a beginner. First decide how much bulk you're willing to deal with. I'd look at the G9 for pocket size and a low end DSLR like a Nikon D40 (the little kit lens that comes with it would work fine for portraits) for something a little bigger. Look at the reviews on the web and especially the sample photos, see if the pocket cam is good enough or if you want the DSLR. www.dpreview.com

You've posted this probably in the wrong subforum, then - since you're asking about a DSLR if you already have a compact.

Around here, the recommendation would be for (if portraiture is your primary goal) an EOS XTi and Canon's 50 mm f/1.4 lens. The leftover money can go for batteries and cards. Another option would be an XT with the 24-70 f/2.8 L. It'll cost a bit more in total, but the 24-70 will be more versatile as a portrait lens.

Or a Nikon D40 with the 18-200mm Nikon lens, it should still fall within your budget. The extra zoom could be handy for candids, street shots if that's what you mean by people. You're not going to be disappointed by the photo quality from any new DSLR with a good lens.
