Soapy Smiths grave yard.

Soapy smith was an outlaw/roughian who moved to Skagway Alaska during the Klondike hayday. He was there only about a year and he pretty much ran the town by then. He was NOT liked and they local population had a town meeting to figure out what to do with him and how to deal with him. He got word of the meeting and showed up to the meeting. he walked in in the middle of it and Frank Reid, a local surveyor and Saopy both drew guns at the same time and shot each other. Soapy dies the next day and frank took 12 days to die. Frank was burried a hero.

i just delted my whole response here. The front side its confusing me since I cannot figure out what the first letter is. I figuired the first to be katakana to be his/her name. I got most of the letters down, but i couldnt figure out what any of it meant, missing the first letter hurts. The side i believe is kanji (or a mix of) and i believe it to be the year of death. _ thousand _ hundred _...the _ are the blank characters. I looked for "numbers" but im sure they didnt match. Do not take this all 100%.

as for the front for anyone who knows a bit of japanese this this may help

_ ho to na ka no te so (or its 'n' hard to tell) sa fu ko o

ima work on it!

edit I believe the first one is ni (hi) though i dont know.

pretty cool!for your "ghost" go longer, with a smaller aprature, and have the person go slow and pause in a few places. You will be amazed what you come out with, but it can take some playing.

Great job, keep working at it, I would love to know what it means.

It seems that at all the other grave yards I have been to the "chinamen" from this era were not burried with the "white folk" so I thought it was odd to find this marker amongst the others, actually right next to Soapy Smith.

Now, it may have been relocated to this location, or maybe it spoke of the persons high stature in the community or maybe the fact that Soapy Smith is next to this marker it speak to Soapys poor stature in the community....LOL

So use a longer ss, and have the person move slower and stop on and off? Am I understanding that right?

it's hard to see in the pic, but there are tenten marks.
i think it's highly probable that the man's name is "nakano densaburou" (with the surname given first in the traditional east asian style).

the first word is kanji (i'm gonna refer to kanji as "chinese characters" in respect to the origins) while it can be pronounced in several different ways, it basically means "day."

the second word could be the chinese character for "wood", but i think greenxeyezz is correct, it looks more like the letter "ho" than the word for wood.

the third word looks like the chinese word for "person," which can be pronounced as "to" and several other things. it also looks like the letter for "n".......

the short of it is this: the first 3 words are kind of confusing, but it's very likely that the grave marker was for a japanese male named "nakano densaburou." the date given on the side is sometime in the 19 somethings, it's hard to tell.

superdiver, is there any chance you can take more photos for us to have a clearer view of all the words?

Sorry, I only took the one shot....I will be up there again for the run next year and if I remember I will get a few differnt shots of it...

While I am sure writen down somewhere in a very scientific form however, what you are doing unless you do something like this a lot to play with exposure, and create an image. To me it is just point short of painting with light. Instead your painting with pausing over a long time.

i swear i looked at the picture soo close and so hard late last night cause i was LOOKING for those damn tenten marks. and I look now after you say they are there, and SURE enough, THEY ARE THERE! damn man, no wonder nothing made sense! im glad i got the nakano though, makes me feel a bit better that I didnt forget=)

and i agree about the year, very hard to read and see and it looks like it has addtional markings on it.

i feel so craZy now that i can see the marks CLEARLY and before i didnt even SEE them at all.

The first word also looks like the "strokes" are wrong for it to be DAY (nichi) but it seems like its the ONLY viable option lol thanks for helping clarify this!


EDIT: isnt nakano a city in tokyo though?
