It is ever so slightly front focused, wrt to eyes. it is not soft at all, but the focus plane is slightly in front of the eyes

You don't say whether you shoot RAW and whether you used some USM as recommended by Canon, or jpeg and what the settings were...so it's not possible to say if it could/should be sharper.
