I'm wondering why the OP asked the question. Did you think it was soft or did someone tell you that.

I think the focal plane is quite sharp and that the eyes are a tad soft by not being in the focal plane but this is not a fault of the lens or the camera but the DOF available by the aperture and/or you focused on the eyes and then physically moved the camera before you took the shot. That is easy to do when your DOF may be a few cm thick.

You don't have pix edit option checked off by your name so I sent you a PM that shows the diff. between yours and with a bit of USM side by side...(personally I think it and many of the pix posted here ARE soft)
