For those of us who can't afford the wireless file transmitters...

I had the idea to buy some cheapie used Ebay laptop for $200, tether it to my camera, and place it in a little backpack so I can carry it around with me while I am shooting.
Even more fantastical would be to rig it so the laptop is laying open and flat against my back, with the monitor visible, so people behind me could see the shots. I bet moving pics from the laptop to my desktop would be faster than from the CF card to desktop. And storage wouldn't be an issue either.
Anyone do anything like this?

Canon 40D w/grip, 85mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8, 20k lumen studio fluorescent DIY light kit, 2 strobe studio kit, 580exII, PW's.

That's almost exactly what I've done, although I've not straped it to my back. I got a Fujitsu P-600 tablet PC from ebay for £100, put a 100Gb Hard drive in it and connected it up to my 400D. at less that 3lbs it's light enough to carry round and I can even to some on the spot PP with the stylus, it even has a CF card slot built in and if I added a wireless card, I don't se why it can't be used as a cheap wireless transmitter too.

I have thought about it but never done it. And how are you planning on moving the pics from the laptop to the desktop? Wireless via shared folder? That might work. As for having it open on your back so the audience could see the pics that would be very akward and weird. You'll be moving around, squatting, kneeling, laying on the floor, whatever position to get the pose just right so the laptop could throw off your center of balance. Could be tricky. And then what if during the shoot all of the movement disconnected the usb cable? I've done tethered shooting practicing some family shots and didn't realize the usb cable came loose from the camera.
