The first shot... it had a face on it's abdomen that looked like a human face. I'll see if I got a better shot....most of them came out bad.... due to my heeby jeebyness...

I think it's an orb weaver, but that's a pretty common name for a lot of spiders. We have 'em in Calgary too... it was the subject of my first post in this forum:-)

Is that an egg sac on the back of that spider, or is that part of the spider. I smushed a spider last week, after it had found its way into the house, and she had hundreds of little baby spiders on her back, and they all went running...I was convinced that I had spiders in my bed for weeks...

Actaully, I think it's a Cross Spider (external link), and I don't think that's an egg sac ...

I'm not so sure it's a cross spider, although it is some form of Araenidae. Not bad shots. Spiders aren't that bad guys, there's no real need to kill them. They'll happily leave you alone, and they'll help control the local pest population (mozzies, flies etc) in your house.

Generally I agree with you, but when you have one with hundreds of babies on her back, and a wife screaming at you as your six month old baby son leans over to see what it is, you try and act quick, and, well...smushing it seamed the quickest solution to the chaos...Little did I know the fun was just beginning as I had to then sit there for the next several minutes and squish all of the running babies as they spread throughout the room...Usually, though, I would have caught him and let him out the back door...
