so i was just wondering if anybody tried to use the BG-E4 grip on one of the XXD series bodies. the reason i am asking is because the BG-E4 is way better than the cr.. i mean BG-E2 and since both cameras share the same battery and have fairly similar body dimensions, maybe it will work.

anybody with both bodies and grips care to comment?

It would be nice to know if and which Canon reps frequent this forum. I know they visit DPReview's cesspool of a message board, but at times like this, it would be nice to be able to tell them directly when so many people, almost unanimously, dislike a certain Canon product.

Perhaps we could have used the BG-E2N product launch as a means to allow Canon the opportunity to redesign the grip had we A. known the product was coming and B. had a contact that reports user concerns to the decision-makers. (One may exist here publically and I'm just ignorant of the fact. Wouldn't be the first time.)

I could forgive some of the cheapness of the design if the grip at least looked better attached to the camera. Though, I imagine a more complimentary fitting style, similar to what Nikon does with the D200 and D300 (perhaps more) grips, would go a long way to reducing the flex in the BG-E2 for a start.

Well, just a quibble that's been bothering me for some time. Actually, for as long as I've been in contact with Canon dSLR grips in general. (Some of the Canon film camera grips looked the business, and felt the part.)

I'm adjusting ever so slowly to Canon's sometimes outragious accessory pricing, but the grips they stick us with, and indeed, even the 3rd party-knock-offs that miss a golden opportunity to improve upon a design and offer something better than the OEM part, seem to be an especially egregious example.

There, I said it.

I don't think the BG-E4 will work on the 40D/30D/20D. I had owned the 30D and I tried it and it didn't work since the BG-E4 is a tad larger than the BG-E2.

I know what you mean about the 5D grip being much better built than the BG-E2. It has a more of a solid feel when held.

the question is why didn't it work since both cameras use the same battery. is it physically larger and therefore won't even attach or it attached but didn't work?

I'm trying to remember clearly but, I think it has either to do with the part that screws in on the bottom and the 5D being slightly larger and longer.

I know I'm not answering your question but, it's one of those things why it didn't fit.

It's been a while since I had both of them sitting in front of me, but it goes something like this: Since the 5D is a smidge larger than the XXDs, so too is the battery pack. Even though appears it very close in dimensions, it'd take some extensive modifications to move either the tripod screw or battery post. Aside from that, I wouldn't be surprised if the internals are all but identical.

And in all truth, I felt the differences in function and fell were slight, if any.

It doesn't work on the 10D or the 20D.

If you go to the dpreviews of the 5D vs the 20D and 30D...you'll see some roll over images of size comparisons. Looks like the 5D is ever so slightly bigger. Then again, the 40D is supposed to be ever so slightly bigger too. But whatever the reason (be it size or interface), the 5D has its own grip.

Beside the physical size, the battery doors, specifically the door switch is different between the 2 bodies.
