On my 30, when you were to delete a file and press the trash button, it gave me an option to delete just one or all files right there. On the 40D, pressing the trash will let you delete only the file you're previewing and you have to go to a different place to delete all files? Is that right or am I missing something?

You are correct. During playback, only the selected image will be erased. You can select (with a check mark) multiple images to be erased, and are erased using trash button, or you can erase all images in that menu... Of course, if you are looking to delete all images, I think it is better to simply reformat the card in-camera.

In that case, I have found one thing that I really dislike about the 40D. Makes zero sense to me to move the "delete all" option to a different location then where it used to be on the 30D.

It bugged me at first, but now I kind of like it..removes the chance to accidently delete everything. Just add erase all or format to your custom menu.

Can you call your custom functions by pressing another button or do you have to go to your manu button and scroll to your custom functions?

Sounds like a good idea to me! Recently, I was dumping images to make it through the tail end of a horse show. This always worries me as it would really be easy to erase them all on the 30D. Would only take a moment to format on the 40D

No, I understand why it was done. People must have complained about it, so it's changed. I never came close to erasing all my images and it was convenient for me. I guess I'll get used to it. Would have been nice if you could be customizable but ... it can't all be perfect.

Was this option available on 10D, 20D, 5D etc?

I always thought this was one of the dummest option EVER! even when i had my Canon Ixus 40 3 year ago, it was delete 1 file or all and my g.f managed to delete all her holiday pics!

So what took them so long to change it!

also protect all option would be nice!

I think it is a good option to avoid accidental delete of all files. I guess it takes time to get use to:rolleyes:

It's a nice thing Canon moved it to another part of the menu. I've never accidentally erased all my images with the trash button on my 20D, but I've come very close on a number of occasions. If you happen to spin the back wheel a little too agressively, it'll end up on the erase all setting, and if you're not paying attention, poof! There go all your images.

I use a 4Gb card that will hold over 400 RAW's on the 20D, and have two 4Gb microdrives as backup. I've pretty much adopted the policy of not erasing single images during a shoot. I wait until I've downloaded to my computer, then I erase the ones I don't want.

Bloody good move to get rid of the "delete all" option!

A quick format will do that job, without any risk of inadvertently binning a bunch of images you actually want.

Just one of many things I like about the 40D...

Have to go to your menu, but it remembers the function you used last.

I like it. I have almost deleted "all" a couple of times.
