Is anyone here getting the 40D ?
I am seriously thinking of it as I take a lot of shots at higher ISO mainly 400 and 800
I am very happy with the 350D its great, but was thinking of the 400D recently for the bigger screen as I wear reading glasses and its a a bit tricky seeing if the shots are sharp veiwing them on the LCD
Then the 40D came out its got an even bigger screen and the IQ should be even better
The first shot was taken at ISO 800 would I see any difference if I took the same shot with the 40D ? I have posted this question on the equipment forum and have already made the decision to get the 40D I just wondered what you guys think
Sorry there's been lots of these posted but I love these guys

Don't worry about posting d/f's Lots of us love them. :D

As regards the 40D, I don't think I'll be upgrading yet. There are one or two lenses I need before that, and I can't afford those yet...

As for using the screen for review, I rarely bother (except to check exposure). There has been the occasional time when I've used it to check the sharpness when I know the opportunity for another shot will not come along, but even then, a shot I thought looked sharp on the screen, was soft on my monitor.

As for noise in the first shot, it looks great to me, but I'm not a pixel peeper, and no doubt there are some who will see a degradation in quality. It's just not obvious to me...:D

I'm switching my MPE65 from my 20D to my 30D - you will like the larger screen to check focus. Many shots I thought were sharp yesterday on the 20D's small screen were in fact OOF. Of course you can zoom in but thats more time.

Lovely shots :)
In two minds re the 40D- seen conflicting reports on higher ISO noise - one implied it was as good as the 5D the other implied it was worse than a 20D. I'm in a similar boat re reading glasses- I shoot without glasses on and can hardly see the LCD. I'm not convinced live-view would be much good for my normal style of shooting ie shooting as I pass through focus but may be ok for my dewdrop shots where I'm normally resting the camera on something. Think I'll wait till more in depth reviews come out on IQ and noise at diff ISOs (not that I was going to rush out and get one anyway :) )

Thanks :D was really pleased with the first shot for some reason the colour and contrast look great, wish I could do it more often :D
thanks Bernie you are right lenses are more important I think I've got the lenses I need most of the time I use the Sigma 105 and the 70 - 200 for birds when I'm on holiday.
thanks Toby, at the mo I have to put my reading glasses on and zoom in, always want to know if I got the focus right
Thanks Brian
It will be a while yet before I get the 40D probably around christmas , I promised the missus a holiday next year and the price of the 40D is lower every time I look.
Interesting Brian about the conflicting reports on ISO noise hopefully we will see some proper reviews soon , been looking in Smiths not seen anything in the magazines yet.
If the ISO performance is the same as the 20D / 30D I may just as well get the 30D as its relativley cheap now.

Cant comment on the 40D, but love the two shots. Any noise in #1 really is not that noticeable (and certainly not distracting) as the colour and clarity of the dragonfly keeps they eye focused on the subject.

They are both beautiful shots.

I'm thinking of getting the 40D. First the live view would be a help me with my macro shots. Also the magnification feature is nice. The screen on the XT is getting to small when reviewing macro shots. Also I enjoy shooting birds. And I think the improved AF would help with BIF shots. Since it is back order in many stores it will give me time to read some of the post of people on this forum.

I have no idea about the relative merits of the 40D vs anything else, but if these are taken with a 350D then I'd keep on going with it as they're pretty good. Shot 1's background is a bit busy but shot 2 is very nice.

excellent #2 shot ! :D

i got the 40D ...2 days ago, i havent tested it fully yet, but the ISO seems great even at 1000. The live view doesn't help much in macro, but it's a cool option.

Thanks RW2
Thanks Eccles you have a point about the 350D, (These were taken with a 350D) and I am very happy with the shots I get and still learning how to get the best from it.
Thanks illusionest

i did a quick ISO test of the 40D today, if you're interested.
All 100% crop of the center, subject is a toy car.

note: HUGE image, so dont click if you have slow internet.

Very impressive results, ISO 400 is usable, while ISO 1600 looks around ISO 800 on my 350D.

Hi Thanks for taking the trouble to do this
the results at 400 look really good , ISO 400 is what I mainly use and the ISO 1600 does look pretty good too
