Hello,

The autofocus on my XT picks the background in a good number of shots. Is this common with the camera? It isn't a big problem, I just see it happening a decent amount. I have the camera in AI servo.

No, it is not common..
Did you manually choose focusing point, or you put it on Auto and let the camera select?

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

It isn't really common with it, I just notice it because its usually the important shots...I usually am the culprit when it comes to the manual focus points, but the autofocus doesn't always get the foreground. For instance, in the photo below, the camera was on auto and selected the point, I did all manual settings otherwise.

I've only had the camera since July.

I don't see how auto-selecting an AF point can ever be usable.

Sometimes I just don't have time to select the focus point, so it stay in auto. I had the time and should have selected the focus point above, and I didn't: is the auto select an AF point on the XT just not all that good? I can't imagine it is, which is probably my issue.

Auto AF point selection is just a bad idea.
Keep your focusing point at center and manually choose another one, closest to point of interest, when you need it..
