Ive shot around 1000 frames with my 40d so far, and today had an err99. It was a one time thing, and seems to be ok now.

It happened when using a custom function on the dial. I'm still within the return window on the body, do you guys think I should return it, just to be safe?

It hasnt happened again, it should be noted...

I get Err99 on my XT, but only when I confuse the camera. ie I'll change the WB and try to change the aperture setting at the same time. I'm so familiar with the camera because I've shot with it for 2.5 years that I can change the settings very quickly without thinking about it. If I go too fast, I get Err99. My guess is that it's just like running too many processes on a PC at once, causing the system to lock up. All I have to do is turn off the camera and turn it back on- then it's everything back to normal.

update: Ive now had the error99 message around 6 times today. The store I got it from doesn't have any stock at the moment, but is going to take it back. I guess I'll be without a replacement for a few days.

Am I the first to receive a dud 40D?

maxxed,
I haven't gotten an error yet on my 40D. However error99 could be anything like dirt on your lens contacts, or your lens not seated perfect on the camera. It might not be the camera at all or it may. I would bet not.
Good Luck with your problem.

I had a 30D for a long time and never had this problem. It happens with all lenses attached, too. I would expect the 40D to be just as reliable as the 30D, if not more so.

Everything else is equal, the only difference is the body here. If the 30D performs perfectly with the same lenses, dirt, seating, etc, I can only conclude the body is a dud.

I had the same problem on my 40D. I thought it was a one time thing too but after hours of playing it came back. I had mine exchanged. Just to be safe I would return it.

Nope. There was another 40D err99 thread in this forum a few days ago.

Well it goes back today :( I cant say I'm excited to let go of it, especially on a Sunday, but I guess theres not much choice. I'll wait until it gets dark ;)

edit: I've seen numerous posts on forums about this issue now, seems its getting quite widespread.

I did not have err99 showing, but the first time I took it out, switched on and everying locked up, requiring the usual battery removal to restore.
