Canon in NJ packed my 300 f/2.8 with just paper, and the lens was touching the side of the box(no padding at all). I originally sent it in for a cleaning. It came back with broken IS. I complained about the packing, and the non-functional IS, and sent it back. It was wrapped much better on the return trip. IS had a broken part, my guess is damaged from their first return to me.

Canon doesn't care :(

Looks about right to me, except mine was with a little sturdier type of continuous roll paper.

I think you need to be a CPS member to be offered a spare while you're down.

I picked my camera up at the Canon Service Center in Irvine, CA and they had it in a bag, with a stick on temporary body cap, and bubble wrap over my LCD.

It looks like that location packages better for the shelf then the other locations for shipping.

I always send my stuff to Canon in the original boxes, complete with the styrofoam inserts. I label the box with my repair number. Canon sends my stuff back to me in the same box, surrounded with the ubiquitous newspaper.

And UPS packs my original box in a double box, since the shipment gets insured.

FWIW.

Unfortunately I have had several dealing with Canon service both NJ and CA. All four times though the equipment was returned packaged very thoroughly with the equipment in a plastic bag, then wrapped in bubble wrap and the air space in the box stuffed with some type of brown corrugated packing paper. What you got is pretty shoddy.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

It looks like it's standard to Canon to send lenses like that ^^

When we are talking about that I hear that Oly in Croatia usualy send spare camera until your is on repairing if you ask ofc, and that standard repair time for it is maximum 14 days. And here they need around 20 days just to check camera and see what I wrote that is not working..

Another thing what's fascinating too. My friend buy new Oly lens and in 2-3 weeks he got mail from Olympus that they give some extra discount on lenses for 1 month. He send them mail back that he already buy lens and they could tell him about that discount before. After that he got call that apologise about it and they send him new CF 2gb card (in that time around 90 EUR worth) for free.

I'm sure Canon will never do something like that.

Sorry to hear that it's so bad in Croatia. In the U.S., I've never seen packing like that from Canon. Items I've sent were always sent back in a plastic bag, wrapped in bubble wrap, with sturdy brown paper (looks like it's purpose-made for packing) around that. They might not always get the repair right, but at least the packing is decent.

I sent my XT to NJ 3 different times and got the plastic bag and brown corrugated padded packing paper but NEVER any bubble wrap. In fact, each time they kept the 14 pounds of bubble wrap I had my camera wrapped in.

I always send mine thoroughly surrounded with eggcrate style foam, and my last one came back with new dead pixels (was sent with none) and packaged like the picture above. Hard to justify sending it back when you know that's probably how it'll get shipped back even if they fix anything though.

I'm beginning to think this is more typical than unusual. My returns have been well packed so I have no complaints there, but the general lax attitude and the repair that seems to be more focused on "throughput" than determining and fixing the problem is what's bugging me.
