Direct tethered storage

My first post. horahh!

I have got my Canon EOS 4OOD tethered to my Apple laptop and either using Canons DPP or EOS utility for remote firing. I was not fussed with either options so i managed to get some scripting and got it to shoot directly in to Aperture. Im happy with that. RAW download is not that quick as you would expect but does the job OK. Saves to laptop HD instead of CF card.

Now i don`t want to cart my laptop around with me and i know there are storage device such as the Epsom P5000. That via download after inserting a CF card.

My question is, does any body know of a compact storage device like the Epsom which i can shoot direct into, instead of removing the CF card & inserting in to A device. I know i could use a wireless transmitter but it would be quicker via something the USB 2 out on the camera.

I have searching the net and have yet to find anything.

One question. Why? Any wired solution will be awkward to carry around and, as you've discovered, very slow.

A third-party wireless solution for the 400D will cost you more than the camera did; the third-party wired solutions are about as bad. And Canon doesn't have any answers for the 400D.

The p-3000 has that possibility but does your camera? I know the 1d mkIII and the 40d can do that but not sure about the 400D??

Im not exactly sure what the benefit of tethering to a non-laptop external device would give. if you are running out of card storage, just pick up a larger CF card (4GB for ~$60) and swap cards when one is in the epson.

Run multiple cards, try to avoid using large cards for the simple reason that if you have a card failure you will loose a lot of photo's. Then use a portable MMS device to dump the cards too. I use an X drive but will be replacing it soon as the rechargable battery is dying and cant be replaced. Can't complain though as the X drive is 6 years old. I shoot mostly motorsport so quick image handling is imperative, but it dosent mean you need to spend a fortune. 3 x 2gig cards and the X drive will get me 2 days shooting at the race track, roughly 2,000 images.
