looks good. I got to play with a 40D at best buy today. Focus does seem to be faster. I tried the live view but couldnt figure out how to get it to work with AF. The controls and settings sure feel different then my 30D..I want one

Wow... doesn’t look like that camera is suffering from any focus issues. Pretty impressive, and a very nice demo.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

You can only MF in Live View, which is pretty dumb. But I put Live View to work yesterday, so it is useful.

HMMM I thought the 1DMKIII was only MF but they added AF ability on the 40D...I guess I read that somewhere wrong

You can set CF's so that it will black out, AF, then flip the mirror back to live view again. Though MF with live view is easy as pie, so it's rather pointless.

I guess you're right.

You have to set several features!

- CnFn III-6 to on
- Lens on AF
- Drive to OneShot
- Use AF-ON, press and hold until its beep to confirm the focus
- press the shutter to shot

Good luck!

I don't recall reading that in the manual and I couldn't figure it out. I just assumed that you couldn't AF in Live View since one of the first things you have to do is put the lens on MF according to the manual. We learn something new everyday I guess. I'll have to try it when I get home from work.

Yeah, if it works clumsy like that I'm not sure if I'd want to use AF with Live View in the first place.

How about that AI Servo at 6.5 fps though, eh?

If you look frame by frame, you will see at least two frames out of focus. The last frame is obvious (and for obvious reason), and one in the middle.

In RG's test of 1D Mk III, a lot of the frames were off by something like 15cm and considered out of focus. If it is focused off by 15cm in the above photo, I would not be able to tell.

Do not get me wrong, I think the focus in the above photos are good enough. Just that the standard for judging 40D's focus is different (and should be different giving the price difference) from that for 1D Mk III. But if putting it to the same standard, 1D Mk III is doing better (comparing with RG's posted photos).

Canon 1D Mk III/5D2, Sigma 50mm f/1.4, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX, Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX, Canon 85/1.8, Canon 100/2.8 IS macro, Canon 135/2, Sigma 150-500 OS, Canon 500 f/4 IS

No, you're right.

They're going to add it to the mkIII with a firmware update.

Yeah, right
