Crashoran,
I have been very happy with AF on my 40D. It is so much more accurate then my 5D or 10D AF by a large........ amount. So much so that I am actually using it, where on my other cameras I very rarely if ever used AF because my hand and eye was more accurate. ;) Heck the AF was even great with 40D and my cheap 75-300 f/4-5.6 III lens
However I don't know how it would compare to your 1D? ??? as there are only 9 points

Its that much more accurate than a 5d's autofocus?

Whether 40D has AF problem or not depends on your expectations.

This link http://www.komar.org …400d/canon-40d-autofocus/ (external link) contains "good samples" of 40D autofucus photos (originally posted under https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=377746 ).

Comparing the above "good" 40D sequence with RG's "bad" 1D Mk III sequence, I would say the 40D sequence has more focus problems. Then, you may ask, why RG claims his 1D Mk III sequence has problems? Well, RG is putting 1D Mk III at a MUCH higher standard: if the focus is off by something like 15cm, it is considered out of focus.

Even with the small 40D photos, I can spot at least 2 photos our of focus (but a lot more than 15cm). If the 40D photos are in original size, I am sure a lot more are out of focus by 15 cm.

Do not get me wrong, I do not think the 40D sequence is bad. It is focused well enough, because I do not judge 40D by the same standard because it costs a lot less than 1D Mk III.

The only AF issue I'm having is that WAY MORE of my pictures are IN FOCUS compared to the XT.

Tyreman,
Yes on all focus points except the Center. The Center Focus point on my 5D and 40D seem to be neck and neck with accuracy. In fact the Center on the 5D should be more accurate on the 5D because of the 6 hidden when using AI Servo AF. However every other focus point on the 40D is more accurate and better in low light (at least it seems to be so far :) ).

The AF on my new 40D seems to be quite good. I was going to get the MkIII, but decided to wait until it's sorted. In the mean time the 40D is a good compliment to my 5D. Best of both worlds for now.

So far my is focusing spot on in AI-Servo. However, I have not been able to get out for a true sports test as of yet. Hopefully I will have time today.

Heck, I'm just trying to get used to the wonderful viewfinder.
