Canon 20d freezing with 70-200mm 2.8 IS?

A few days ago I was offered to do a wedding, though how ever, I had a bad feeling about my equipment. Ironically, a day later before a football game my 20d with the 70-200mm 2.8 IS froze up. I ended up having to take out the battery. Thursday i picked up the 40d and had the camera store check it out. I haven't heard since then. I looked up on this problem and I read on a site"The fix is to persuade Canon to repair it - hopefully yours is still under warranty, because the repair involves a new IS unit, a new electromagnetic diaphragm unit, and a new mount on older lenses, costing several hundred USD." Is this true? or? If it is, it would make sense because it's my well going luck lol. I feel like selling my 20d and getting another 40d. Im curious though how many actuations it has, my good estimation is 85k, time to sell.

From what you're saying (and it's really hard to follow you), the site you found is describing a fault in the IS of the 70-200. If that's the problem, it should function well with IS turned off, but fail, either by locking or ERR99ing with IS on. Not a body problem in that case.

Unless it does it over and over, I wouldn't worry to much about it. All the DSLRs I've every owned have locked up at one point or another. Usually I just hit the lens release button, twist the lens, on and off, then turn the camera on and off, and that usually clears it up. I think that sometimes the connection between the camera and lens gets mucked up for some reason. Don't know, but its not that big of a deal to me, so I've never really worried about it. Its probably happened about a half dozen times over the last several years.

Been happening to me too lately. However, I am using a 20D-w/grip, 70-200 (non IS) and a flash bracket. Not sure if it is the grip, the lens or what. I just shut the power off, pop the battery out and release the lens.

I've never had it happen to me.

had my 2oD for two years, had about two error codes and i case of it freezing. Took lens of put it back and its been perfect. Im afraid this is where current technology is at. Freezes lockups. Phones do it. Im in the car trade and they even do it!!!

The BG-E2's prone to flexing if you try to support the camera by it rather than with your left hand under the lens. This can cause just what you're experiencing.

I think I read that somewhere before I started using the combination. However, last night I went to snap a couple pictures of my newborn son with the 20D/grip and 50/1.4. He was just starting to smile...snapped the first picture and on the second press of the shutter...it was froze and I missed the big smile. That is the first time this has happened without the heavy lens and bracket setup. Needless to say I wasn't happy.
